WHAT IS THE BEST BREED FOR NEW PIG FARMERS?
For new pig farmers in Zambia, the best pig breed will depend on your goals (e.g., pork production, breeding, or both), your budget, and your ability to provide good housing and feed. However, some breeds are generally recommended for beginners because they adapt well to local conditions, grow fast, and have good meat quality.
Here are the top breeds to consider:
🐖 Large White
✅ Advantages:
Fast growth rate and good weight gain.
Excellent mothering ability (large litter sizes).
Good adaptability to different climates, including Zambia.
Produces lean meat (preferred in the market).
🐖 Landrace
✅ Advantages:
High fertility and good milk production for piglets.
Large litter sizes.
Fast-growing and high feed efficiency. ❗ Consideration: Slightly more sensitive to heat and poor housing.
🐖 Duroc
✅ Advantages:
Hardy and more resistant to diseases.
Good for crossbreeding to improve growth rate and meat quality.
Performs well in semi-intensive or extensive systems.
🐖 Local (indigenous) or crossbreeds
✅ Advantages:
More tolerant to heat, poor housing, and low-quality feed.
Lower disease risk.
Good option if starting with limited resources.
💡 Best advice for beginners
👉 Start with Large White or Large White × Landrace crosses.
They give a balance of productivity and manageability.
Crossbreeds between exotic and local pigs also do well in harsh conditions and are easier to manage.
👉 Focus on good management (housing, feeding, hygiene, and veterinary care) because even the best breed will not perform well under poor conditions.

When maize (corn) leaves turn purple, it’s usually a sign of phosphorus deficiency, especially in young plants. Let’s break this down a bit:
Why Does This Happen?
1. Phosphorus Deficiency:
Phosphorus is essential for energy transfer and root development.
When maize can’t get enough phosphorus, it often shows stress through purple or reddish coloration in leaves, especially along the veins or leaf margins.
2. Cool Soil Temperatures:
In early spring, soils might be too cold for roots to take up phosphorus effectively, even if phosphorus is present.
Young plants with underdeveloped root systems can’t access deeper or cooler soil layers.
3.Other Stress Factors:
Waterlogging, compacted soils, or root damage can also limit phosphorus uptake.
What Can You Do?
✅ Check Soil Temperature: Wait for soil temperatures to warm up, which often helps plants grow out of the problem.
✅ Soil Test: Confirm phosphorus levels and adjust fertilization if needed.
✅ Improve Soil Conditions: Reduce compaction, improve drainage, and ensure good root growth.
✅ Hybrid Selection: Choose hybrids less prone to purpling if it’s a consistent issue in your region.

CABBAGE 🥬 FARMING
What to do after transplanting cabbage.
Growing cabbage requires proper care and management to ensure growth and high yields
1.Before transplanting
✓stop watering seedlings 4-5 days before transplanting. This hardens them and improves the survival rate.
✓choose good seedlings with 5-6 leaves for transplanting.
2.Day of transplanting
✓Mix soil with well rotted manure before planting for long term fertility.
✓Water the seedlings well after transplanting to reduce transplant shock.
✓Fertilizer application at transplanting it is unnecessary at this stage.
3.Routine for watering
✓First 3 weeks: water twice daily {morning and evening} for root formation.
✓After 3 weeks: Reduce watering to once every 2 days to encourage deep root formation
>Avoid sprinkles: They promote w**d growth and make cabbage heads too light.
4.{3rd week} fertilization
✓plough the land before applying fertilizer to allow even distribution
✓Apply NPK + DAP to promote strong vegetation growth.
✓Apply fertilizer two 2 inches away from the plant to avoid root burn.
5.Disease and pest control { 3rd week}
✓Thunder: control worms and caterpillars.
✓Easy grow or booster plus to enhance leaf formation and growth.
6.(4th week) Fertilization & spraying
✓spray pesticides and fungicides to prevent common disease like downy mildew and black rot.
✓Apply CAN fertilizer for continued growth.
7.Weeding
✓w**d once or twice a week but stop w**ding once the cabbage heads start forming.
Tips:
- Regularly monitoring for pests, diseases and nutrients deficiencies.
- Harvest when heads are firm and fully mature.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen after head formation to prevent splitting.
