How to Improve Leadership Skills Inclusive

There has been a great amount of talk about people’s mental health and how we should be mindful of the impact the pandemic had on people, not just those who are deemed vulnerable, but also those who may show an outward strong persona. We don’t know how people are suffering.

So, the term that has been raised very frequently is that of inclusivity. We need to see how we can incorporate this in our everyday dealings with our own team members and beyond.

Emily Hastings of Crestcom International notes for ways we can become more inclusive in the way we lead our team. Here are her tips, with our own interpretations of them:

1. Make visible commitments

We need to be visibly talking about inclusivity and diversity, and go beyond the rhetoric. Challenging the status quo is an important mindset to have if we are going to make inroads against the way things have always been.

2. Have a degree of humility

We cannot know all the answers, and there is no disgrace in saying we need help. If you make a mistake or don’t know, ask others for help and really listen deeply to those who may have ideas for us.

3. Be aware of any unconscious biases that may exist

We all have blind spots, so becoming aware of them helps us and others to deal with issues without them staying in the background. If we can identify what may constitute our biases, we stand a greater chance of moving away from poor judgement and getting better results.

4. Maintain a curious nature

Being open-minded and great listeners embody a good quality inclusive leader, and it’s vital that these aspects turn into strengths for us. Show empathy on a regular basis, building quality learning attributes that allow you to show quality attributes at all times.

Just these four won’t make you an overall inclusive leader. But they will go a long way in assisting you to develop the awareness that’s needed to create a mindset that is driven towards that kind of mindset.

Introduction to Project Cycle Management

Project cycle management (PCM) is the term given to the process of planning and managing projects, programs and organisations. It is used widely in the business sector and is increasingly being used by development organisations. Development projects sometimes fail because they are badly planned and do not take account of some important factors, particularly the needs and views of stakeholders. PCM is based around a project cycle, which ensures that all aspects of projects are considered. A central value of the PCM method is that aspects of the project are reconsidered throughout the project cycle to ensure that any changes, which have occurred, are included in the project design. As a result, projects are more likely to be successful and sustainable.

Understanding the Project Cycle

The process of planning and managing projects can be drawn as a cycle. Each phase of the project leads to the next.

IDENTIFICATION To identify what a project will focus on, we need to find out who should benefit and what their needs are. A ‘needs assessment’ will give an overview of community problems. A ‘capacity assessment’ will help identify which problem the project should address.

DESIGN/PLANNING Once it is decided to go ahead with the project, we can start to think about the details. This involves carrying out further research into the people affected by a problem and how they are affected by it. We also need to consider the risks to the project and how we will measure the project’s performance.

IMPLEMENTATION During the implementation of the project it is important to monitor and review the progress of the project and any outside changes that affect it. The project plans should be adjusted where necessary.

EVALUATION Evaluation should be carried out at or after project completion. Evaluation could be carried out a few months or years after the project has finished in order to assess its long-term impact and sustainabilit

Practice questions: rate, ratio& proportion

On July 7, 1995, 100 people in Lusaka were invited by Mr. Junk foods for dinner. All of them ate the food that was served for dinner. The next day (July 8, 1995) 90 of the 100 people who ate that food developed diarrhea.
Calculate and interpret the attack rate of diarrhea which occurred on July 8, 1995.
If 30 of 10 000 hookahs commonly known as sh**ha smokers developed lung cancer over a 10-year period, while 3 of 10 000 non- smokers developed lung cancer over the same period;
Draw up a 2x2 table and populate it using the information above
What is the incidence of cancer occurring in the exposed?

What is incidence of cancer occurring in the unexposed?

Between 2005 and 2010, as part of the Zambia National Public Health Institute Survey, 7,381 persons’ aged 40-77 years were enrolled in a follow up study. At the time of enrolment, each study participant was classified as having or not having diabetes. During 2016- 2018, enrollees were documented either to have died or were still alive. The results are summarized as follows:
Classification
Original enrolment
(2005-2010)
Dead at follow- up
( 2016-2018)

Diabetic men
189
100

Non-diabetic men
3,151
811

Diabetic women
218
72

Non-diabetic women

Calculate the ratio between the diabetic men and nondiabetic men.

Calculate the ratio between the diabetic men and women.

Calculate the proportion of men in the ZNPHIS follow-up study who were diabetics.
Calculate the proportion of deaths among men.
Calculate the risk of death for these men.

In 2003, 400 new cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were reported among final year students at Unilus .
The estimated final-year student population at unilus in 2003 was approximately 4, 200.Calculate the incidence rate of AIDS among students at unilus in 2003.
