Tips on making Silver Nitrate solution
When making standard silver nitrate solution, make sure that the silver nitrate is of high purity. Dissolve silver nitrate in distilled Water. Store the solution in a capped glass container.
You need to know that: a) If the silver nitrate used is not of high purity the solution made will not be colourless b) if the solution is stored in a bottle that is not capped the solution will evaporate making the solution more concentrate. c) if tap water is used the dissolved solutes in tap water will interfere with the reactions.
Note: One Mole of Silver Nitrate weighs 169.87 grams. So a 1.0N solution is: 169.87 grams diluted to a volume of 1 Liter. (For standard silver nitrate Normal and Molar have the same meaning. (because it’s Valence is +1)

Safe disposal of Acids and Bases
Mineral acids and bases may be neutralized and the resulting salt solutions flushed down the drain, provided that the material is not hazardous for reasons other than its acidity or basicity. Follow the steps below:
• Prepare a dilute aqueous solution of the acid or base to be destroyed in a beaker or wide-mouth flask.
o Always add acid or base to an excess of water. Never add the water to the acid or base, because the heat generated may be enough to boil the water, and expel the substance violently from the container.
o Set the container in a plastic tub containing ice-water while preparing the solution.
• Similarly, prepare a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide if you wish to neutralize an acid, or hydrochloric acid if you are neutralizing a base. Cool this solution in ice-water also.
• Using pH paper or a pH meter, and keeping the receiving flask in the ice-bath, neutralize to pH 6.6-7.4. Stir well while mixing the solutions.
• Turn on the cold water in the sink to a vigorous stream, and wash the neutralized solution down the drain.
How to safely dilute acids
In science laboratories, there are many experiments that require the use of either concentrated or dilute acids. One setback of using concentrated acids is that it is very hazardous, hence the need for dilution.
When working with acids, it is very important to work safely. Therefore, when diluting acid always always add acid to water, not the other way, round because heat is generated when water and acid mix. When acid is added to water, water absorbs the heat safely and it has somewhere to go and the water just warms slightly but remains un-reactive.
On the other hand if water is added to concentrated acid, the heat will go into the concentrated acid causing it to fume, spatter or even boil, hence, giving off corrosive fumes and droplets. Any work with concentrated acids is hazardous and should be done carefully. Work safely, always wear goggles, gloves and a lab coat for protection. You must also use suitable laboratory equipment, and volumes that are small enough for use in simple lab glassware. Finally avoid inhalation corrosive vapours.
