A story is told of a farmer in Uganda who had a quarrel with his wife. In the heat of the argument, she packed her bags and left. Days passed, but she didnāt return.
One morning, the farmer walked to the market and bought a giant pair of womenās underwear size 100. That night, he soaked them in water and hung them outside on the clothesline for all to see.
By sunrise, the neighbors had noticed.
āEeeh! He must have remarried,ā they said.
Some even took photos and sent them to the wife.
By noon, she was back storming in, ready to confront this ānew womanā only to find there was none. Just a pair of oversized underwear flapping on the line⦠and her husband taking light meal like nothing had happened.
Turns out, it was just a trick. A silly, clever one. But it worked. Not to hurt her, but to bring her back.
Now, this may sound funny, but many are the times God has done the same with us. Not with underwear but with love that surprises us. With ātricksā that seem strange at first, but are rooted in mercy, not malice.
In Hosea 2:14, God saysā¦ā¦
āTherefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her.ā
Even when we walk away from Him, God doesnāt force us back. He allures us lovingly, gently, sometimes through unexpected ways to remind us we are still His.
And as 1 Corinthians 13:4ā5 reminds us.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast⦠it keeps no record of wrongs.
So maybe, like the farmer, God sometimes lets the neighbors talk⦠just so we come home again
