Zambia's Copper Queens capped off their historic first appearance at the FIFA Women's World Cup with a 3-1 win over Costa Rica in their final group match.

The win, which was Zambia's first ever at the World Cup, came courtesy of goals from Lushomo Mweemba, Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji.

Mweemba opened the scoring in the third minute, becoming the first Zambian player, male or female, to score at the World Cup and her goal is now the Quickest goal at the ongoing world cup.

Banda then doubled Zambia's lead from the penalty spot in the 31st minute, before Kundananji added a third in stoppage time, Banda’s goal was also a historical goal as it was the 1000th goal in the history of the women’s world.

Costa Rica pulled one back through Melissa Herrera in the second half, but it was too little too late for the Central Americans.

The win leaves Zambia third in Group C, behind Japan and Spain.

"Everyone is happy in our camp," said Copper Queen's coach Bruce Mwape. "It's history, it's our first World Cup appearance and despite losing our first two games we managed to go back home with a win."

The win will be a major boost for Zambian football, and the Copper Queens will be hoping to build on their success in the years to come.

Zambia's win is a historic moment for African football, and it is a sign that the continent is on the rise. With more investment and support, African teams will be challenging for the World Cup title in the years to come.
