🧠✨ When Autism and ADHD overlap: Understanding AuDHD
You may have heard the term AuDHD appearing more often. It is an informal term used to describe someone who is both autistic and has ADHD.
And sometimes, the combination can look a little contradictory from the outside.
A child may:
💙 Crave routine… but struggle to follow one
💛 Want predictability… but constantly seek novelty
💙 Become deeply focused on an interest… but struggle to focus on everyday tasks
💛 Want friendships… but find social interaction exhausting or confusing
💙 Need sensory input… while also becoming easily overwhelmed by it
💛 Have lots of ideas… but struggle to organise, start or finish tasks
💙 Hold everything together all day… and completely unravel once they feel safe at home
This is why looking only at behaviour can sometimes miss what is really happening underneath.
The question isn't always "Why won't my child do this?”
Sometimes a better question is:
“What is making this difficult for my child right now?”🌱
Understanding the why allows us to support regulation, executive functioning, communication, learning and confidence rather than simply trying to change behaviour.
