Deutsche Schule Durban

Deutsche Schule Durban Deutsche Schule Durban is an independent, co‑educational German primary school in Cowies Hill, Westville. No problem. We start the journey with you.” Klasse.

Admissions open for Kindergarten & Grade R (18 months–5 years), continuing through Grade 7. “No German? The Deutsche Schule Durban is an independent co-educational German primary school that offers a holistic education for children between the ages of 3 and 13, from Kindergarten to Grade 7. In an increasingly globalised world, there are more and more families choosing to give their child the benef

it of German as an additional language. Pupils from homes where no German is spoken are very welcome but have to join in Kindergarten so that they have a firm grasp of the language by the time they enter Grade R. Our teaching is based on the South African and German curricula and aims to develop the children holistically, instilling positive values. From Kindergarten onward, all children have regular sports and music lessons and participate in fun events throughout the year such as Fasching (carnival) and Laternenfest (lantern festival). At present there are approximately 120 pupils in our school and the school has developed into a well-known educational institution in the Durban area, with top local high schools eager to recruit its grade 7 school leavers.

🙌👏 A big cheer for Tristan Hellberg (8th) and Leo Karnasch (10th), our Grade 7 learners who achieved outstanding results in the Horizon Mathematics Competition 2026! Their hard work and problem‑solving skills make us so proud.

We also celebrate the excellent achievements of:
* Benjamin Bredekamp (20th)
* Micha Büttner (26th)
* Nicholas Camp (47th)
* Rebekka Paul (55th)
* Oswald Wichmann (76th)

All placing in the Top 100 in KZN! 👏

Frau Küsel (HoD Senior Primary and Grade 4–7 Maths teacher) shared: “Doing well in a small school with a high academic standard such as ours is already praiseworthy, but having their problem‑solving skills measured against other young talent throughout the country and seeing them excel in a national competition such as this makes me exceptionally proud of them both!”

And the journey continues: Tristan will compete in Round 3 of the South African Maths Challenge (SAMC) at Kearsney College on 10 September. Best of luck, Tristan, we’re cheering you on! 💙🙌

No German? No problem.

At DSD, families come from every background. Whether German‑speaking or not, children grow into the language naturally, and we’re here to support every step of the way.

Just as Grade 1 parent Donna Muldery shares in her family’s journey, it’s proof that every child can thrive. 🌱✨

In less than a month, Tristan Hellberg will represent DSD in Round 3 of the South African Maths Foundation Olympiad, a stage where only the top young mathematicians in the country compete. 🇿🇦🙌

Our school has been part of this Olympiad journey since 2017. And since Round 3 was introduced in 2019, DSD has had one, two, and even three learners reaching this level every single year.

This year, Tristan carries that tradition forward. Out of 4498 Grade 7 pupils nationally, only 130 advanced to Round 3, and Tristan is one of them.

Numbers, logic, and plenty of courage to aim high. Tristan, you’ve made us proud, and we’ll be celebrating you as you take on Round 3. 🎉👏💙

🔢🌱Every year, the Horizon Maths Olympiad gathers thousands of bright young minds from across KwaZulu‑Natal. This year, our Grade 6 & 7 learners stepped into that tradition, joining 6188 pupils from 42 schools in a celebration of problem‑solving and perseverance.

From that starting line, 20 of our 21 learners advanced to Round 2, held at Star College, where they stood shoulder‑to‑shoulder with 1834 pupils from 35 schools. And then came the highlight that will always shine in our story: 9 of our learners placed in the Top 100. 👏

Meet our finalists:
Grade 7: Tristan & Olivia Hellberg, Ben Bredekamp, Leo Karnasch, Oswald Wichmann
Grade 6: Rebekka Paul, Jamie Tennent, Nicholas Camp, Micha Büttner

We’re proud of every one of you, keep shining! 💙✨

Leo’s journey at DSD has been one of belonging and growth. From learning a new language to thriving in friendships and sports, he discovered that school is more than classrooms, it’s a home. 🤍💙

With Grade 7 soon to be wrapped up, Leo and his family return to Germany to continue his school journey. He leaves with the confidence and resilience nurtured at DSD, a place that will always feel like home. ✨🏡 We wish him and his family all the best.

Our learners joined the We Collect textile recycling challenge and together collected an incredible 676.39 kilograms! ♻️✨

This amazing effort also brought in a fundraising total of R5,371.12 💙

Grade 5 topped the leaderboard with the highest contribution and celebrated with a pizza lunch 🍕, but every class showed that when we act together, we all win.

Thank you We-Collect Textile Recycling for sparking this green movement.
