Meet Robin Francis - Biomonitoring Officer

Wildlife conservation has always been more than a career goal for me, it's a passion. 🌿

Growing up in Johannesburg, I spent every chance I could in the field, developing a love for nature and a particular fascination with reptiles. Today, with qualifications in Nature Conservation and Conservation Management, I'm working towards a career in conservation research while sharing knowledge and promoting environmental awareness.

Every experience in the field is an opportunity to learn, grow, and inspire others to protect our natural world. 🐍🌍

🐾 Camera Trap Fridays: Baboon Edition! πŸ“Έ

Meet one of Welgevonden's most intelligent and adaptable residents, the Chacma Baboon.

These highly social primates live in troops, communicate through a variety of vocalisations and body language, and spend their days foraging, exploring, and keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings. Thanks to our camera traps, we can observe these fascinating animals going about their daily lives without disturbing their natural behaviour.

Meet Kaylon Minnaar - Biomonitoring Officer

Growing up in the city, I always felt drawn to the bush. My journey began at Welgevonden, where I volunteered after matric to discover whether I had what it takes to live and work in conservation. That experience changed my life and confirmed that this was the path I was meant to follow. 🌿

I left my permanent job to study Nature Conservation and, during my studies, volunteered as a research assistant before joining Somkhanda Community Game Reserve. There, I gained hands-on experience in reserve maintenance, wildlife monitoring, snare sweeps, wildlife interventions, and community conservation initiatives.

My journey then led me to Wildlife ACT, where I worked as a Priority Species Monitor at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and a Conservation Course Facilitator. From endangered species monitoring and leopard surveys to wild dog care, wildlife collarings, lion management, and contributing to vulture conservation projects, every experience deepened my passion for protecting our natural heritage. πŸ¦πŸΎπŸ¦…

In 2024, I came full circle and joined Welgevonden as a Biomonitoring Officer. I'm grateful for every opportunity, challenge, and lesson that has shaped my conservation journey, and I'm excited to continue making a difference for wildlife and the ecosystems we work so hard to protect. πŸŒπŸ’š

Meet Megan Antrobus - Biomonitoring Manager

My love for wildlife and conservation started during my childhood in Johannesburg, where family trips to game reserves sparked a passion for the natural world. 🌿

After matric, I completed my FGASA Level 1 training with EcoTraining before earning a BSc in Conservation and Ecology from Stellenbosch University. I then gained practical experience in conservation and lodge management, followed by a Trails Guiding qualification and Advanced Rifle Handling certification, which further strengthened my commitment to conservation.

Driven by a passion for understanding and protecting wildlife, I completed my MSc in Wildlife Health, Ecology and Management at the University of Pretoria's Onderstepoort Campus in 2024. Along the way, I volunteered at various programmes and assisted with study abroad programs in the Kruger National Park, gaining invaluable field experience.

In July 2024, I joined the Welgevonden Biomonitoring Team, where I continue to pursue my passion for conservation, research, and protecting South Africa's incredible biodiversity. 🐘🦏
