Can I be honest? Authority is the thing most of us get wrong first.
Too firm, and your child obeys out of fear. Too soft, and nobody knows who's actually in charge. (Including you.) And to add to the complexity it looks different as your child grows.
And then there's that moment where you hear your own parent's voice coming out of your mouth... and you're not sure if that's a good thing or not.
Here's what I've learned: real authority isn't about control. It's about being so consistent, so trustworthy, so safe that your child chooses to follow your lead. Not because they have to. Because they trust you.
That takes more strength than shouting ever will.
