Shark Conservation And Research - SCAR

In South Africa, gillnetting is largely illegal.

This is because it is an indiscriminate fishing method that often captures and kills marine life unintentionally, including threatened species.

Only TWO fisheries are legally allowed to use gillnets:
1. The commercial fishery for mullet and St Joseph shark, which operates on the west coast north of Yzerfontein, including the Olifants Estuary and Langebaan;
2. Bather safety gear (Shark Nets) managed by the KZN Sharks Board.

Less than 10% of all gillnet catches in South Africa fall under these legal exceptions. In many cases, gillnetters are not working in isolation, and evidence suggests gillnetting activities often form part of highly organised crime activities.
