Friday motivation: to every learner in exam prep

To every Gr 8–12 learner heading into this weekend with Maths on their mind 👇

You don't have to master everything this weekend.

Pick the one topic you're most scared of. Spend 45 minutes on it. Do 5 questions slowly, with every step written out. Then rest.

That's it. That's the whole plan.

Confidence in Maths doesn't come from studying harder. It comes from proving to yourself, one question at a time, that you can do it.

You've got this. 💚

Share this with a learner who needs to hear it today. 🙏

Should my child do Pure Maths or Math Lit?

One of the most stressful conversations parents have with their Gr 9 child:

"Should you do Pure Maths or Mathematical Literacy next year?"

Here's my honest take after 15 years of watching both paths unfold:

Pure Maths opens more university doors — engineering, science, accounting. If your child has the ability and the work ethic, it's worth the stretch.

Mathematical Literacy is not the "give-up" subject. It teaches real-world skills: budgets, tax, data, graphs. Learners who do it well — and who choose careers that don't require Pure Maths — are making a smart, valid choice.

The worst outcome? A child pushed into Pure Maths they can't cope with, who ends up failing and losing confidence in everything.

The best outcome? A child in the right subject for their strengths, doing well, and building a future.

What subject choice stress are you navigating right now? Ask me in the comments. 👇

Exam tip for parents to share at home

If your child says "I understand it when the teacher does it but I can't do it myself" — read this. 👇

This is one of the most common things I hear from Gr 8–12 learners. And it has a name: passive understanding.

Watching someone else solve a problem feels like learning. But it isn't — not yet.

Real understanding only happens when your child closes the textbook and tries it alone.

Here's a simple habit that works:
→ After every example, cover it up
→ Try to redo it from scratch without looking
→ Only check when you're done

If they can't do it — that's okay. That's the gap. Now they know exactly what to practise.

With mid-year exams approaching, this one habit can make a real difference. Share this with your child tonight. 💚

Hi, I'm Mr Ratsela 👋

I'm a Mathematics DH with 15 years in the classroom — and this page is for every parent who's ever sat at the kitchen table watching their child struggle with Maths and not knowing how to help.

It's also for learners who've been told (or told themselves) that they're just "not a Maths person."

That story ends here.

I'll be sharing:
✅ Tips to help your child at home
✅ Free resources for Gr 8–12
✅ Honest advice about the SA Maths curriculum
✅ Encouragement for learners in the final exam stretch

Follow the page and share it with a parent or learner who needs it. Let's make Maths less scary — together. 💚
