STEM Nerds

🧡🎗️Last night, I was privileged to attend the Klein Lochieland school concert, and seeing Dapper Duane and Little Lionheart Mia-Miri standing on that stage was truly something special. 🥹🧡

What a blessing it was to witness these two little fighters on that stage. — smiling, performing, and simply being kids — was such a beautiful reminder of hope, strength, resilience, and just how precious life is.

And how fitting that their songs — “Voorwaarts Mars!” and “Sweet Dreams.”🧡🎗️

2026 – The Year of Amazing South Africans in STEM 🇿🇦🔬

This year we are celebrating incredible South Africans who impact the STEM world and inspire the next generation of scientists!

❤️🫀 Valentine’s Day

We kicked off February celebrating the legendary Christiaan Barnard, who performed the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant — a moment that changed medical history forever.

🪨👩🏻‍🔬 International Day of Women and Girls in Science

We honoured Prof. Marian Tredoux. Tredouxite, a rare mineral on the Periodic Table, discovered in the Bon Accord nickel oxide body in South Africa, was named in her honour.

🌺👩🏻‍🏫 National Science Day

Did you know that Strand has its own science hero?
👩🏻‍🔬 Toinette Horn from Laerskool Lochnerhof - offisiële bladsy!

When she’s not teaching, she inspires future scientists as Director of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists for the Stellenbosch Regional Science Fair. Her favourite field? Biology! 🌱 🌺

👨🏾‍⚕️🦻🏾 World hearing day

Prof. Mashudu Tshifularo led the first team in the world to use 3D-printed bones for middle-ear implants, restoring hearing for people with certain types of deafness. Imagine giving someone the gift of hearing!

🇿🇦 Our country is full of brilliant minds. Let’s keep inspiring the next generation of STEM Nerds! 🔬✨

🧡🦁 Official Challenge! 🦁🧡

I’m challenging all the other extramurals at Klein Lochieland to come and wrap a tree Pink Trees for Pauline for our brave Little Lionheart Mia-Miri💖 All funds raised go directly towards her treatment.

We’re also asking each extramural to sponsor a year of free classes, which will be raffled off to our Grade R and RR kids in 2026. 🌈

Let’s stand together, make it fun, and show Mia-Miri how much love surrounds her! Who’s in?

Please contact the Klein Lochieland office (021 854 8592) to accept the challenge!

Remember to post a video challenging your rivals and friends! 📹

It's happening tonight! 👇🏻

The total lunar eclipse will last 5 hours and 27 minutes, featuring a breathtaking 82 minutes of totality—when the Moon is completely engulfed in Earth’s shadow. During this time, it will glow in rich hues of deep red and copper, creating a stunning Blood Moon.

✨ Where to look?

🟠 Africa & Europe – Full eclipse view as the Moon rises in the evening.
🔵 Asia & Australia – Visible late at night or early morning of Sept 8.
🌍 Pacific Islands – Excellent visibility across most of the region.
⚠️ Americas – Unfortunately, the Moon won’t rise during the eclipse here.

Adding to the wonder, the eclipse happens just 2.6 days before perigee—when the Moon is closest to Earth. That means it will appear slightly larger than usual.

🌊🐢 Happy Turtle Day! 🐢🌊
Today, we learned how scientists use coding to help guide tiny sea turtles safely back to the ocean — and how technology and conservation go hand in hand! We also explored the importance of marine protected areas and how we can all help protect our oceans and the amazing creatures that call them home. 💻🌍💙
