WHAT IS TACTILE SENSITIVITY AND CAN ANYTHING BE DONE ABOUT IT?

"Instead of finding touch comforting, nurturing and a source of communication, it is perceived as a threat and the child/adult instantly withdraws in an instinctive self-protective response. As a result tactile discrimination is under-utilised, impairing bonding, exploration and hands-on learning.

This could lead to a poor self-image and avoidance of social contact, since the child finds it difficult to feel safe in his skin and to sense where he ends in space and where others begin.

The Mind Moves Massage is a perfect way to start addressing tactile sensitivity.

HOW?
The child must stand upright and hold both arms 90 degrees to the side of the body. Parent stand behind the child and firmly trace the outline of the body from head to toe.

Hold the feet for a moment before repeating 3 times.

This move develops tactile awareness, gravitational security and a positive sense of the self.

BODY IMAGE = SELF-ESTEEM

Being familiar with your body, and in fact comfortable with it, is the basis of good self-esteem later in life. If you ever suffered from a poor body image while you were a teenager, you may remember looking in the mirror and wishing that those weren’t your legs, or that your face was different. You feel a sense of detachment or separation from your body. It is that sense of alienation from your body that we want our children to avoid. We want them to be deeply connected and in touch with – and to like – their bodies.

Doing the Mind Moves® Massage with your child, allows the brain to develop an accurate map of the body. This can be done by doing the Mind Moves Massage, outlining your child’s body firmly:
• around the head
• down the arms
• hold hands tight
• under the arms
• down the body
• onto the legs
• hold the feet tight.
