[10/01/20]   Hello colleagues I don't know how many of you managed to pay bills at the end of September but for White Hall it was particularly challenging. Every month we look at our true expenses then we look at what is coming in and what we can realistically pay. The creditors are not interested in what challenges you have they just want to be paid. As I considered whether to quit and hang up my coat for good, I decided to find inspirational words that will give me some hope and I came across this quote "Rest but never quit. Even the sun has a sinking spell each evening. But it always rises the next morning. At sunrise, every soul is born again."
unknown. So I hope it motivates you if you were thinking of quitting. Have an awesome rest of the day

[06/13/19]   Values in Business
So today the issue of values in business has been the main focus for me. Every business has its core values and usually these values also have a great deal to do with your spiritual journey. If you are a Christian, the foundation of your core values in business will have a great deal to do with your faith journey.
Thus today we had to walk away from a potentially lucrative partnership. We had spoken extensively and liked the project, the partner concerned is young, energetic and well connected. This project has the potential to change the city and also make us money, but when you take away all that and delve into the issues that will impact on our values we had to say no thank you. After all For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Mark 8:36.
A few months ago a client of mine was confronted with a contract that came with condition of a bribe, for a struggling small business it looked appealing. I was not at peace with it all as he contacted me to advise him on what to do. I reminded him that he had to make a decision based on his values. I also reminded him the bible says there is a way that seems right to man but its end is death. Proverbs 14:12. The next day he contacted me to say that he refused the project and the client came back to him and gave him the project anyway. I received a R5, 000.00 reward for my advice.
Sticking to your core values pays off. Even if you are struggling, compromising on your values can in the end leave you with sleepless nights, a feeling as though someone has placed concrete in your stomach and no matter what victories you will never be hundred percent sure that you got something because you were the best.
If you are in business and you have not thought of what your values are or the culture you want to inculcate in your company then this is the time to do so. Without clarity you can enter a rabbit hole that you can’t come out of.

[06/04/19]   PARTNERSHIP TIPS: A CASE STUDY
Good morning colleagues I just want to share our experience on partnerships. This actually started as a tip for my fellow entrepreneurs and has grown into a full article. It may be long, but the information shared could potentially help others who are embarking on partnerships with others.
Around September last year a friend from university (this is a 34 year relationship) and her sister approached us to invest in our business. We have been struggling quite a bit from cash flow issues.
They came in like tornados, telling us a year from now we would be struggle free, they will work with us to build the business. They believed in us and what we have been able to achieve over the years and they wanted to relieve us of some of the burden we have been carrying for the past seven years. They proceeded to come to our office on and adhoc basis, then it increased until it was daily. By December they had contributed about R50k into the business, which was obviously a loan we would pay back.
We had an office in an industrial park which may not have been state of the art but was functional and served our purpose, but then the control issues started, they believed our location was not good for where the business was to be positioned. They offered to pay the rent for a year as their contribution to the business so really even if we had issues about moving we needed not to worry as they ‘got this’.
Here is where I caution anyone in business, particularly small and micro business, your instincts are never wrong, if your gut tells you, you are going down a rabbit hole that you cannot climb from, please change course immediately.
This is where we went wrong, mesmerised and slightly paralysed, we allowed ourselves to be ‘bullied’ into moving. So the quest for a new office began. My moods changed like a yoyo, and all because my gut was telling me to run in the other direction. By January we had now given in our notice and relinquished the decision making of our future office into their hands. An office was found in Morningside, no problem with it except it was more expensive (our rent almost doubled) than where we were moving from, less convenient for our staff and less control as the landlord was not even communicating with us.
We moved, still trying to rationalise in my head that it was going to be okay and that I was behaving like a petulant child, here are people that want to help us and all I was doing was fighting with them every day. I was now second guessing myself, I was the problem, I was having problems letting go, clearly I was too attached to my baby (the business) and did not want anyone else to have control. Our business was okay, but clearly we needed help because we were not managing things properly, these were some of the internal and external arguments I was dealing with in my head. But the biggest elephant in the room was the fact that we had not even broached the subject of just how much we were going to give in exchange for the ‘investment’.
In February we had a mini strategy session to try and bring everyone together so that we could understand each other better, we even paid money we did not really have for a facilitator, we booked into an air bnb just to ensure that we could devote the entire weekend to the process. I told myself that we would have proper working processes in place by the end of it all. The weekend was a disaster, we spent most of it trying to justify everything we had done in our business thus far. I came across as an emotional and difficult person who was making the process difficult. I even ripped into my husband for a not so well thought out comment and the weekend ended in misery.
Still we plodded on trying to make the relationship work. To really ensure that the elephant left the room, we discussed how much shareholding we should give to them and we agreed as a family (the business is owned by myself and my daughter) that 12% was reasonable, this was not something we were asking them to purchase, we were giving it to them. By now their financial contribution had increased to R97k because of the deposit paid for the new office. Although this was to be paid back. But now there was also an expectation of salaries which we had stupidly not factored in. We were not even taking salaries ourselves but now it was a case of they have bills to pay and things are tough on their side so we really need to start paying them. We had now moved from investors to salaried employees with aspirations to become shareholders so that they can make strategic decisions in our company.
The situation worsened and our offer of 12% was considered ineffective as it would not allow them to make strategic decisions. There was now an impasse because we could not let go more than 12% we were all weary and the realisation that we were making a mistake was plainly obvious. We agreed that the partnership was not going to work and we needed to go our separate ways.
Everything seemed amicable until two weeks ago when we started getting demands for payment of the loan (the investment). We had agreed 50% upfront and the remainder to be paid monthly for a period of six months. What was interesting was the fact that they even presented us with a table highlighting salaries that they were discounting.
Well wouldn’t you know? In the life of an SMME your finances can be so erratic that you may end up becoming a liar. As we have faced payment delays, we have been bombarded with accusations of indecent behaviour, we have been told that we are now reneging on our agreement, we are told that they do not care about our financial position and that other people would take on two or three jobs in order to honour their obligations and that we are basically selfish. If I was depressed and anxiety ridden before all this happened you can be rest assured that the situation is now ten times worse.
There is so much more that I have not shared and I am sure if you as readers were to have an audience with them you will receive a different perspective. Maybe I have gotten it completely wrong.
The message here is that no matter how attractive an opportunity may appear do your due diligence.
1. Be clear of what you expect
2. Believe in yourself and your business (after all if you had nothing to offer no one will approach you to invest in your business)
3. Be clear of the parameters within which you want to work with others
4. Do not allow anyone to work in your company without having an agreement in place before they start
5. Seek counsel from an experienced professional (I was advised by a very experienced professional and close friend not to embark on this without having all our ducks in a row. She even advised on the types of partnering that we could engage in but the ship had already sailed by then, were already in the raging sea and the ship was sinking)
6. If your gut tells you something is off, believe your gut (there is a way that seems right to man, but its end is death).
7. If you do get caught up in the moment and things go wrong, get help from an experienced professional to extricate yourself from the relationship, trying to do it yourself may end up creating the challenges we are facing now.

Finally guys it is not true that you should not mix business with friendship, many people have done it successfully. The main thing is have an agreement in place before you launch out. Do not be shy to speak finance and ask the questions that may seem difficult. The difficult questions are the ones you need to ask.
