24SumMore Maths Competition

24SumMore Maths Competition The 24SumMore Maths Competition is an initiative by Peregrine Capital to energise maths learning in an exciting and fun way for both learners and teachers.

It helps young learners build confidence in mental maths while allowing them to compete for prizes. In 2025, 48 Pick n Pay School Club Schools in Gauteng have been invited to participate. The competition is open to Grade 5 and 6 learners who love a challenge. The goal is to find South Africa’s best young maths champions and crown them as the 24SumMore winners! At the heart of the competition is Ma

ths24, a fast-paced card game that challenges players to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to make 24 by combining all four numbers on a card. The game enhances problem-solving skills, sharpens mental maths ability, makes learning engaging and rewarding and builds maths confidence.

The 24 Game is the card game behind the Maths Competition, designed to make mental maths fast, challenging and fun.

Each card features four numbers. Using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in any combination, learners have one goal: make 24.

Quick rounds, countless solutions and a new challenge on every card make it a natural way to build number confidence and sharpen problem-solving, whether it's family game night, a long car journey or five minutes of practice before a competition.

The road to the National Grand Finale continues, this time at Laerskool Wierdapark, where learners put their speed, strategy and mental maths skills to the test.

A huge congratulations to Jordan Opperman, who came out on top and secured his place at the National Grand Finale in Johannesburg this October! 🏆

We’d also like to congratulate Simon Barkhuizen and every learner who took part. From an impressive 1,800 participants narrowed down to just 22 learners, reaching the semi-final was an achievement in itself. 👏

Well played, Jordan! We can’t wait to cheer you on at the National Grand Finale.

Our first semi-final is officially in the books! 🎉

The road to the National Grand Finale has begun, with our first group of young maths minds putting their speed, strategy and mental maths skills to the test.

A huge congratulations to Thato Kwaza from Merrifield College, who came out on top and secured her place at the National Grand Finale in Johannesburg later this year. 🏆

One semi-final down, and the journey continues! We can’t wait to see who will be joining Thato on the national stage.

Financial confidence starts earlier than most people think, in the maths classroom.

Numeracy is the foundation of financial literacy, and financial literacy is what gives women real independence: the ability to make decisions that secure their own futures and build generational wealth.

That conviction is why Peregrine Capital launched the Maths Competition in over 300 schools across South Africa, building number confidence in the next generation of women, one card at a time.

This Women's Day, we're backing the girls in those classrooms.

To every learner competing in the first 24SumMore Semi-Final in East London: good luck, you've earned this.

Getting here took quick, accurate thinking, solving cards under pressure, and performing consistently enough to advance. Those are real skills, built through real practice.

Whatever the result, the habit of tackling hard problems and not giving up is worth more than any single score.
Good luck from everyone at Peregrine Capital. We'll be watching.

Maths does something specific to the brain. It strengthens the neural pathways responsible for integrating information, making logical decisions and sustaining focus. Regular engagement with numbers builds cognitive resilience, the kind that shows up not just in the classroom but in almost every area of daily life.

That’s what the Maths Competition, supported by Peregrine Capital, is designed to do: give learners repeated, enjoyable practice with exactly these mental skills.

On World Maths Day, we want to recognise every teacher, parent and caregiver who makes space for maths in a child’s day. Your encouragement matters more than you may realise.

What’s one thing you love about maths, or something you wish you had been taught earlier? Tell us in the comments.

To every learner competing in the 24SumMore Semi-Finals: you earned this.

Getting here meant solving cards under pressure, thinking quickly and accurately, and performing consistently enough to advance. That is not a small thing. Those are real skills, built through real practice.

Compete with confidence. Use what you’ve learned. And whatever the result, know that the habit of tackling hard problems and not giving up is more valuable than any single score.

Good luck from everyone at Peregrine Capital. We’ll be watching.

Every card in the 24 Game requires a learner to use all four numbers on the card (through addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) to make 24. The constraints are fixed. The approach is open. That’s the point.

Through the Maths Competition, supported by Peregrine Capital, learners build:

• Problem-solving and creative thinking: finding multiple routes to the same answer
• Speed and accuracy under pressure: skills that transfer well beyond the maths classroom
• Foundations for financial literacy: because number confidence is where financial capability begins

Learning through competition changes the relationship a child has with difficulty. The challenge becomes something to engage with, not avoid.
