SWIM TO SAVE THE OCEAN
The fifth annual World Ocean Day Swim sponsored by FNB on June 6 will see top swimmers in a battle for the prestigious titles, but the event's real fight is against plastic pollution in the ocean.
Entries open on Friday for South Africa's biggest open-water ocean swimming event, with Sarah Ferguson, the passionate driving force behind the annual mid-winter race, hoping marine conservation is once again the real winner.
All proceeds go to the race beneficiary, Breathe – one of South Africa's leading marine conservation organisations. This means every entrant is helping with Breathe's dual aims of reducing plastic pollution in our oceans, and inspiring future generations to reconnect with nature and be conscious of their impact on the earth.
Swimmers will once again have a choice of four distances, ranging from 800m, through the traditional mile or 1.6km, up to a testing 3km and the long 5km Olympic distance. Entrants will include an array of swimmers from international stars aiming to shave seconds off their time, to those who just want to do their bit to save the oceans at a more leisurely pace.
Early-Bird discounts on entries will be in place until May 6 with entry fees ranging from R200 for the 800m event up to R400 for the 5km.
Enrties will open on Friday via MyActive at https://bit.ly/breathe-2026

My heart is full with all the feedback I've received from swimmers I helped in preparation for a Midmar swim.
From overcoming panic and swimming pain free to achieving a goal previously thought impossible. I'm greatful for meeting each one of you and delighted that I could help you.

Training for a swimming event whether it be the swim section of an Ironman, the Midmar Mile or longer open water swim, takes time and commitment. Make sure that this time and effort is spent in the best possible way! Don’t aimlessly hit the water to just put in the k’s.
Instead, make every stroke count! Focussing on your swimming technique will improve your swimming efficiency and times. Do you know where your stroke is weak?
A 90-minute swimfast session will give you invaluable insight into where you can improve. The visual impact is powerful and provides a clear image of what you are doing and what the perfect stroke should look like. Specific drills tailored to improve your stroke will ensure that the pool sessions are effective and will guarantee that you will swim faster.
The above image shows an inefficient stroke. The image below demonstrates what it should look like! These images stick in your mind, so that when you swim you are conscious of what you are doing and can correct yourself. Various drills will also make the correct technique become part of your natural stroke.
