Featuring Lunga Mapekula's inspiring story...

"Receiving this degree is a testament that its never too late to start over.

After completing my honors degree in geology I wanted to branch into engineering because I wanted to expand my horizon and something in me kept pushing me to pursue that avenue. But doubt crept in and I put that plan on hold. After a year I finally made the bold decision to enroll into the MEng programme at UCT.

I remember on my first day my supervisor asked me "Lunga why do you want to do Masters in Geotech?"

Lunga Mapekula leaves us with this - To anyone who might find themselves in a similar situation and fear the uncertainty that comes with change, I say to you; Be Bold. Be brave. Be unapologetic"

In July 2019, Prof. Denis Kalumba, Head of the UCT Geotechnical Engineering Group celebrated 10 years at the University of Cape Town. He has been a visionary and a source of inspiration to countless students that have had the opportunity to work with him and to have sat in his lecture room. Wishing him many more years at UCT. May the Geotechnical Group soar to the greatest heights under him with a vision of becoming a World Class Centre in Geotechnical Engineering Testing, Teaching and Research on the African continent.
