Why can’t South Africa afford@ to re-enter the nuclear arms race 🇿🇦💰
When people discuss whether South Africa should ever rebuild nuclear weapons, the debate usually comes down to one bottom line: the cost.
Building and maintaining a modern nuclear arsenal requires hundreds of billions of Rands. For an economy balancing critical national priorities, the financial numbers simply don't add up:
🔴 Severe Sanctions: Re-arming would violate international treaties, triggering global trade embargos and investor flight that would devastate the Rand and hit local businesses hard.
🔴 Massive Opportunity Cost: Developing weapons diverts billions of public funds away from fixing electricity infrastructure, creating jobs, improving healthcare, and boosting our economy.
🔴 Commercial Tech Over War: South Africa already benefits from peaceful nuclear capabilities. Producing medical isotopes at Pelindaba and generating power at Koeberg drives economic value without the catastrophic expense or security risks of weapons.
Staying disarmed isn't just about diplomacy—it is a practical, sound financial decision for Mzansi’s future.
