ECD MANAGEMENT TIP: Don’t Wait Until December to Think About Next Year’s Enrolment!
As we move towards the end of the year, ECD centres are often focused on concerts, graduation, reports and simply getting through a very busy final term.
But this is also one of the most important times to focus on parent retention.
Parents don't only decide whether to return because of fees or facilities. Their everyday experience of your centre matters too. Do they feel informed? Do they see their child's progress? Do they feel welcomed? Do they believe their child is known, cared for and developing?
Here are a few practical things you can start doing now:
Show parents their child's progress. Don't wait for the final report. Share a little achievement, photograph, observation or milestone. Help parents see the learning behind the play.
Communicate about next year early. Send re-enrolment information, fees, class arrangements, important dates and requirements well before year-end. Give current families a clear opportunity to secure their child's place.
Ask parents about their experience. A simple five-question parent survey can reveal small problems you still have time to fix.
Make every collection time count. A warm greeting and a 30-second positive update about a child can build enormous trust over time.
Celebrate the year. Show families how much their children have grown. Create portfolios, displays, photo memories or a simple "Look how much we've learned!" celebration.
Prepare for transitions. Tell parents what the next age group or class will look like and how you are preparing their child. Uncertainty can make parents look elsewhere.
Deal with concerns before year-end. Don't allow unresolved complaints, account queries or communication problems to follow families into December.
Start January before December arrives. Confirm returning children, update enrolment information, plan staff and classrooms, order resources and identify the spaces you still need to fill.
💡 A useful question for every ECD manager to ask this month:
"If I were a parent at my school, what have I experienced this year that would make me excited to come back next year?"
Retention isn't something that happens when you send out a re-enrolment form.
It is built through the experience you give children and their families throughout the year.
