Youth Quilt Academy

I must agree, we have first hand experience with the Youth Quilt Academy. Our young sewists are doing amazing projects are are not afraid to try new techniques or work on modern technology-in fact they love it!!

When I teach a child to sew, I don’t start with a lot of rules. I give them just enough to begin … and then I let them fly. Because the quickest way to dampen enthusiasm is to weigh someone down with limitations before they’ve even had the chance to enjoy it. After my little student's first lesson, she went home with her machine and a handful of my fabric scraps… and spent the whole week sewing. Little pin cushions. Dolly pillows. Tiny imagined projects of her own. She brought them back the next week, proudly showing me each one. Her joy filled me with such joy — and I love her wide-eyed wonder at this big, creative world she’s just stepped into. She’s already been peering through my fabric stash, oohing and aahing over prints, telling me what she loves and what she wants to make … and we’re chatting away like two old friends who share the same language. That’s the real gift of learning a skill like this. Congratulations to Nienke Oosthuizen. Nienke is only 8 years old and joined Marie from Marie's Sewing Creations for all her YQA lessons. She fell in love with learning to quilt. Nienke was one of four lucky draw winners at the end of the series of classes.
