What a powerful session at Global Village! 👮‍♀️

Clare Taylor asked the audience: How does watching a movie or seeing someone with a gun make you feel?

One said: "I feel safe if it's the police"
Some said: "Scared if it's a criminal" 😱

She asked: Have you seen guns in schools, streets and in communities?
Learners shared their experiences:

One said her sister works in law enforcement and came home with a gun. She held it and felt safe, powerful and felt she could defend herself.

Another said he felt scared... "what if it shoots?"

She asked: What would you do if you were surrounded by people with guns?

Some said: "I would run away"

Some said: "I would get my gun and shoot back"

In closing she said: FEELINGS ARE DIFFERENT TO REALITY!

Holding a gun has risks, especially when you are angry 😠 - you could kill or injure someone. She showed statistics 📈 of how many people are killed or injured by guns.

Key messages:
🔴 A GUN IS DEADLY
🔴 A GUN CANNOT ALWAYS PROTECT YOU - criminals will attack you and take the gun
🔴 If there is a gun at home, it's the parents' duty to keep it safe
🔴 GUN FREE SOUTH AFRICA is what we need to be fighting for - A community with no guns is a safe community where only the police and security have guns!

Hard numbers from this week: child homicides in South Africa rose from 893 in 2017 to 948 in 2020. Dr Esnat Chirwa from the SA Medical Research Council told the room that guns are behind much of this rise.

The heartbreaking reality is that every number in these statistics represents someone's child.

Dr Chirwa called for stricter , and we agree. South Africa cannot protect its children while fi****ms are easily available in homes and communities. GFSA will keep fighting for the laws and enforcement that can change this.

This year’s celebration at SAFETY 2026 recognised inspiring campaigns from around the world, showcasing how creativity, science and collaboration can drive meaningful change in injury prevention and safety.
