Voltaire wrote in Candide in 1759:

English translators have rendered it variously — but the meaning is consistent:

“Work keeps at bay three great evils: boredom, vice and need.”

As we mark Freedom Day, we honour the significance of 1994, the sacrifices made, and the hard-won right to live in a democratic South Africa, 32 years into our democracy.

We also know that there is no freedom without dignity, and that it must be felt in people’s everyday lives.

Madiba’s words call on us to continue the work of building a society where both freedom and dignity are a reality for all.

This year, we are training almost 100 staff members at a Pan-African organisation. Complete beginners. No French. None.
A few weeks in, they sent me these messages. Every word is theirs. I have not changed a thing.

Trainee 1:
"Bonsoir Prof Eva. Our French lessons are intense and wonderful. I appreciate you as a teacher, especially how you involve everyone and how patient you are. I am proud of the progress I have made and have become more confident in basic greeting, I often introduce myself in French during meetings but the conseillerere (sp) bit always gets me 🤣. I can also follow a bit better in Francophone meetings, although of course everybody speaks very fast. Merci beaucoup."

Trainee 2:
"Chère Mme Arissani,
Merci beaucoup pour les cours de français et pour votre aide.
J'adore les discussions et les activités en classe. Les cours sont intéressants. Je peux maintenant parler un peu français dans mon travail et avec mes collègues et les participants en français.
Merci Mme Eva, vous êtes une super professeure de français.

Trainee 3:
"Bonsoir madam Eva. For me, la classe c'est bon 👌 I am amazed at how much I have learnt so far, in a short space of time. The class is warm, fun 😊 and very informative! I can hold a simple conversation in French now. I can confidently greet, introduce myself, and respond in French. I can count, say where I work, live, and most importantly, order food in a restaurant or plane in French 😄 I appreciate that u take your time to go through the revision of the previous lesson before the next lesson, that helps a lot. I appreciate how quickly you send us all the notes and class recordings. Further, I appreciate that you are open to us asking questions, you always respond with grace and don't make one feel awkward for asking. You patiently correct us even when we butcher the pronunciation 😄
Let me end here because I tend to write novels 🤭"

A few days after sending these messages, they stood up and delivered a full presentation about their organisation. In French.
Nearly 100 people who, just weeks earlier, had never spoken a word of it.

I keep coming back to that sequence. The messages first. The presentation a few days later. They did not wait until they were ready. They were already ready. They just did not know it yet.

And honestly? That is the part of this work that never gets old.
Not the French. Not the grammar. Not the programme.
The moment someone realises they can. That moment belongs to them entirely.

I just created the space for it to happen.

Working in a second or third language every day takes a kind of quiet courage most people never talk about.

You switch languages at the office door.

You think in one language, write in another, and sometimes present in a third.

And you do it every day, professionally, consistently, without anyone noticing the effort it takes.

But there are moments that still feel harder than they should:

You have the right answer in a meeting but hesitate before speaking. You write the email, then rewrite it three times before sending. You walk out of a conversation thinking of everything you wanted to say.

This is not a language problem. It is not a confidence problem either.
It is what happens when the language you work in is not the one you dream in.

And it is far more common than anyone admits, at every level, in every industry, across every country.

I work with professionals who have different levels. Some are beginners. Some are experienced, capable, and driven.

They simply deserve a space where they can close that gap, on their own terms, without judgment.
