🌟 Teacher Spotlight: Melanie Kroukamp 🌟

Meet Melanie — a powerhouse in the classroom and beyond. From launching the Robo Blunders Competition to coaching winning teams and speaking on national platforms, she’s all about making robotics real, relatable, and fun.

She says it best:
“It’s the thrill of turning ‘Why isn’t this working?!’ into ‘Look what I made!’—with a side of ‘Don’t worry, it only took 12 hours and 5 coffees.’” ☕🤖

Melanie reminds us that teaching coding and robotics isn’t just about the tech — it’s about resilience, creativity, and celebrating every small win (even the bloopers).

Coding and robotics programs for children are excellent ways to introduce young learners to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts through hands-on, engaging activities. These programs foster critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork while preparing kids for a tech-driven future.

Hallo almal!

Ek soek entoesiastiese nuweling onderwysers in Koderings en Robotika—diegene wat genomineer is sonder om selfs hul hande op te steek! Ek het 'n klein eksperiment wat ek wil doen, en dit sal jou niks kos nie. As jy belangstel, DM my asseblief. Ek het net 10 deelnemers nodig. (DM my asb.)

I'm seeking enthusiastic newbie teachers in Coding and Robotics—those who were nominated without even raising their hands! I have a small experiment I'd like to run, and it won't cost you anything. If you're interested, please DM me. I only need 10 participants.

Thank you!

In a previous post, I talked about how experience teaches you to adapt—and boy, did I live that today! As usual, I planned one thing, and something entirely different happened. But hey, that’s the beauty of teaching, right? 🎢

Today’s adventure was a mix of theory and practical on Scratch (aka my love-hate relationship with the X and Y grid). I kicked things off with a blank piece of paper and asked the class, “What’s the difference between theory and practical?” Out of the whole class, ONE brave soul answered correctly. 👏 Small wins!

With that box ticked, I announced our “little theory lesson.” They had to sketch Scratch’s interface on their paper, and we labeled all the parts while discussing what they do. Then came my arch-nemesis: the X and Y grid. 😱

Cue me jumping up and down, waving my arms like a human compass, trying to explain that X is horizontal, the left side is negative, and the right side is positive. (Bonus: now they know my cardio routine!) Eventually, the lightbulbs started flickering, and we wrapped it up with a quick practical session, emphasizing that the center is zero.

Honestly, I think this might have been one of my best Scratch lessons yet. 🎉 Teaching is messy, unpredictable, and exhausting—but moments like this make it all worth it.
