English is a Germanic language, not Latin or “just British” 🇬🇧➡️🇩🇪

When the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes came to Britain from northern Germany/Denmark around 1500 years ago, they brought their language with them. That became Old English.

You can still see it today in the most basic words we use every day:

Germanic core words in English:
- Pronouns: I, you, we, they
- Basic verbs: eat, drink, go, sleep, give, take
- Common nouns: man, woman, child, house, water, hand, foot
- Numbers: one, two, three, four, five

These same words look super similar in German and Dutch:
ich/ik, essen/eten, trinken/drinken, gehen/gaan, Wasser/water

Later, French and Latin added words like justice, government, table, education. That’s why English feels mixed. But the grammar and everyday words are still Germanic.

So yeah — English is basically Germanic with a French accent 😅

Namibia remembers: 70,000 lives lost under German colonial rule 🇳🇦

This week Namibia held a ceremony to honor the Herero and Nama people killed in one of the first genocides of the 20th century.

Between 1904-1908, when Namibia was German South West Africa, German colonial forces killed an estimated:
- 65,000–100,000 Herero people
- 10,000 Nama people

Why? Because they resisted having their land and livestock seized by German settlers.

General Lothar von Trotha, the German commander at the time, wrote: _“I believe that the nation as such should be annihilated, or, if this was not possible, tactically expelled from the country.”_

People were killed, starved, and sent to concentration camps for forced labor.

Germany only formally acknowledged this as genocide and apologized in 2016. Talks about reparations are still ongoing.

History like this matters. We can’t heal what we refuse to name.

God of mercy,
I bring before You the people of Sudan, and all across Africa who are living through war and violence.
Be with the families who have lost loved ones, the children who are scared and hungry, the ones who have fled their homes with nothing.
Give them protection, strength, and the hope that this won’t last forever.
Move the hearts of leaders toward peace, and use whoever You can to bring food, safety, and healing.
Help me not to forget them, and show me if there’s anything I can do, even small, to help.

Happy Africa Day? Not Much to Celebrate.

Another Africa Day passes, and what are we celebrating?

Our people are still hungry while our land is stripped bare. The West and China come in with deals, take our minerals, oil, timber, and leave us with holes in the ground and empty pockets. The wealth leaves the continent overnight, and the locals see nothing but promises that never arrive.

Our leaders are too old, too tired, and too comfortable to step down. They’ve been in power longer than some of us have been alive, and they rule like the country belongs to them. Meanwhile, young people have no jobs, no future, and no voice.

And we’re killing each other. Tribe against tribe, neighbor against neighbor, while the ones at the top get richer. The conflicts they fuel keep us weak and divided.

Since independence, where is the development? The roads are broken, the hospitals have no medicine, the schools have no books. We were told independence meant freedom and progress. What we got was new flags and the same exploitation, just with different faces.

Until we deal with the looting, the greed, and the old guard holding us back, there’s nothing to be happy about. Africa deserves better than this.
