It means every child is seen. Not just counted, but truly known. Their patterns, their pauses, the way they approach a challenge, the way they light up when something clicks.

In a smaller environment, learning becomes responsive. Lessons can slow down when needed. They can stretch when curiosity takes over. Support is immediate, not delayed.

Small classes allow for stronger relationships, clearer communication, and a deeper understanding of each child’s individual learning style. It creates space for regulation, for confidence building, and for meaningful participation.

There is less noise.
Less comparison.
Less slipping through the cracks.
And more connection.
More encouragement.
More growth.

Sometimes the biggest difference is simply being known. 🌿

In Grade 1, learning is not only something that happens on paper. It happens through hands, movement, texture, and play.

Incorporating sensory time into the Grade 1 curriculum allows children to regulate their bodies, build confidence, and engage more deeply with their learning. When children feel calm and supported, they are better able to focus, participate, and retain what they are learning.

Over the past week, we have been exploring the letters t, c, h, and a through sensory activities such as writing letters in sand and forming them with playdough. Tracing letters in sand helps children slow down and focus on correct letter formation, while the tactile input supports memory and concentration. Using playdough to roll, pinch, and shape letters strengthens fine motor muscles and builds the hand strength needed for handwriting.

These experiences support children who learn best through movement and touch, while turning literacy into something meaningful and enjoyable rather than pressured.

Sensory based learning creates a classroom environment where children feel safe to try, make mistakes, and build skills at their own pace.

While I had initially anticipated a different start to the year at Acorn & Oak, we have made the thoughtful decision to postpone our opening to Term 2. This allows us the time and care needed to continue building a space that is safe, nurturing, and truly rooted in growth for our little ones.

In the meantime, I will remain in my current position at a school, continuing to work with the CambriLearn curriculum and doing what I love most, supporting children where they are and helping them grow with confidence.

Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing glimpses of what learning can look like at Acorn & Oak through the CambriLearn curriculum. A gentle preview of the values, pace, and intention that will shape our space.

At Acorn & Oak, we know that finding the right placement for a child with additional learning needs can be challenging and deeply emotional. Every child’s journey is different, and readiness looks different too.

For children with additional or special learning needs, we require a placement assessment to help us understand their current readiness for the learning environment and expectations of the grade they are entering. This assessment focuses on where your child is right now, academically and developmentally, so we can make thoughtful, informed decisions in their best interest.

The purpose of this process is to ensure that each child is placed in a setting where they can feel confident, supported, and capable from the start. We want learning to begin with a sense of success, not pressure or comparison.

We believe learning is adaptable. With the right support, the right pace, and the right environment, children can grow in ways that honour who they are and where they are in their journey.🌿

The child whose frustration grew from not being able to communicate, finding their voice and learning how to share their thoughts, feelings, and knowledge. The child who approached work with “I’m tired” at the start of the day, learning how to ask for what they need and showing up with excitement, ready to share what they’ve learned.

The 2026 year has arrived, bringing with it the beginning of many new journeys.

As I reflect on 2025, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride. Not only in the challenges I have personally navigated, but in the resilience of the children I have had the privilege of working alongside, and the challenges they have overcome in their own quiet, courageous ways.

For nearly four years, I have worked at an autism specific centre, supporting children through both one on one intervention and small group classes. The journey is often demanding and emotionally taxing, yet deeply rewarding. I have witnessed growth that once felt impossible. I have seen children exceed expectations that were set far too low for them. Together, we have pushed boundaries and redefined what being capable truly means.

Acorn and Oak was born out of both frustration and heartbreak.

One particular child showed remarkable growth in a short space of time and was ready to transition into a more inclusive school environment from Grade R. We prepared meticulously, advocated tirelessly, and believed wholeheartedly. Despite promises of inclusivity, we were met with closed doors, vague explanations, and at times, no explanation at all.
That experience stayed with me.

While Acorn and Oak is not a remedial or special needs school, we are deeply committed to supporting children who are capable of engaging with a mainstream curriculum through CambriLearn, even if they need more time, flexibility, or intentional support along the way. We believe learning is not a race, and progress should never be measured by comparison alone.

A daily “diet of ideas” looks like meaningful conversations, stories that invite wonder, problems that don’t have immediate answers, and opportunities to explore through hands-on experiences. It means allowing children to follow a line of thought, to pause, to question, and to discover without fear of getting it wrong.

When learning honours curiosity, children don’t just absorb information. They build understanding, confidence, and a relationship with learning that feels safe, exciting, and deeply human. This is how curiosity lasts a lifetime.🌿
