So many toddler behaviors can FEEL like manipulation. The tantrums. The pushback. The endless power struggles.
But as hard as it is for us parents, we can assure you that this is NOT manipulation. Your toddler isn’t having a hard time because they are “bad,” “spoiled,” “defiant,” or "bossy.”
Pushback is actually a HEALTHY sign of brain development, they’re right on track. ✅ Tantrums, too.
Your toddler's brain is still under construction. 🧠🚧🏗️ Especially the areas that help with emotional regulation, rational thinking, impulse control, language skills, and the concept of time.
Plus, a toddler’s brain is wired to experiment! 🧠🧪🔬 They’re doing exactly what they should be: exploring limits, testing out how things work, and self-expressing when things feel uncomfortable and upsetting.
BUT just because it’s healthy, doesn’t mean you have to live in Power Struggle City. The way that WE as parents respond can either exacerbate the tantrum/unwanted behavior OR shorten the duration + intensity.
✨ We have the power to TEACH them—over time, with patience and constant repetition—new ways to express and manage emotions. ✨
1️⃣HEAR THEM
Repeat their need/want. Make them feel heard..
2️⃣HOLD THE BOUNDARY
Lovingly holding boundaries is 🔑key🔑. To eliminate power struggles completely, we have to hold the boundary quickly, calmly, and confidently every single time. They might be upset. That’s OK. You can support them through big feelings + hold a boundary at the SAME TIME. 🌈
✨Struggling with tantrums, defiance, and pushback? Want to discipline in a way that both WORKS and protects your kid's self esteem? Our best-selling course, Winning the Toddler Stage, has helped over 200,000 families calm the chaos in their homes. End power struggles for good, TODAY. For parents of toddlers + preschoolers ages 1-6. Link in bio!✨
