What is that loose skin hanging under a cow’s neck?

It’s called the dewlap, a loose fold of skin that is especially noticeable in Brahman and other cattle with Bos indicus influence.

You’ll often notice a much larger dewlap on these cattle than on many European beef breeds. It is one of the distinctive physical features associated with this type of cattle.

The dewlap is also part of the anatomy that helps explain why these cattle look so different from breeds developed in cooler European environments. Bos indicus cattle have several adaptations associated with hot climates, including traits that help them cope with heat.

So that loose skin isn't just something hanging there. It's one of the features that makes Brahman-type cattle instantly recognizable.
