With school nearly out for our winter holidays I just want to thank everyone for their continued support as I have spent the last 6 months navigating and growing my own little business, REST Assured. It has been stimulating, rewarding and very real… I have learnt more about myself, and people in general, in this short space of time than the 20 years I was in the classroom. I am fully aware of my limitations - they frustrate me daily!

Thank you to all the parents who supported me by purchasing practice papers, thanks to other business owners who have guided me, and met my pace when necessary, thanks to other parents for trusting me with shaping their children’s lives and thanks to the schools who have expressed interest or invited me to run my study and life skills program on their premises. Thanks to old colleagues who have more faith in my abilities than I do and last, the biggest thanks, to my very special group of friends and my little family… it’s you who have kept me going!

It’s nearly holidays! Time to put away the study notes and have a little fun!

About the REST Assured Practice Papers: 📝

These tests can be used in various ways.
1. As a form of revision. Begin by using the tests as an open book test, making use of the textbooks or notes to help you answer questions.
2. As an actual test, to review what you do or don’t yet know/understand.

All test and exam papers (5 in total) cover the Grade 7, Social Science (History and Geogrpahy) Term 1 and 2 CAPS curriculum. 📖

All test and exams papers make use of a variety of different test questions. For example: multiple choice, true and false, matching questions, completion questions and longer questions. 💭 🤔

All test and exam papers encourage many levels of thinking, from the basics of remembering and understanding the curriculum content, to being able to apply and analyse it, to higher order critical thinking questions that require evaluation and creativity. 🧠

The History tests (x2) and mid year exam make use of sources to allow practice in this skill. 🐪

The Geography test (term 2) and mid year exam provides practice using real life case studies, used extensively in the curriculum. 🗺️ 🌋 The Geography test also includes a matching game about the structure of the Earth as well as a writing/oral task to help the children familiarise themselves with the structure of the Earth 🌍

All test and exam papers come with full marking memos🤩 so that the test taker can see how to answer tricky questions and is able to self check and correct him or herself ✔️

For R200 you can make your life just a little easier 😁

PLEASE! Respect the universally accepted copyright codes and ethics. These tests and exam papers CANNOT share these papers©️

Keeping it in the circle family, welcome to two more useful thinking maps, a Venn diagram and a double bubble map, both used well to compare and contrast two ideas or topics.

I have used Grade 7 Social Science (History): The Transatlantic Slave Trade as my content focus, specifically the individual resistance shown by slaves against slavery.

Remind your test and exam writing children to use colour (consciously) and to add pictures wherever them can. 🧠

With exams just around the corner remind your children about the humble circle map, a useful way to to brainstorm what you know about a topic before studying and an even greater revision technique to see what you have remembered (or not).

1. Start by drawing a small inner or central circle, this is the central idea or topic that you are learning about or brainstorming. ⭕️ Write down this idea or topic inside the circle.

2. Draw a much larger outer circle.

3. Between the inner and outer circles write down everything that you know or remember about the focus idea or topic. Add in small pictures where appropriate. (We often add a timer - 5 to 8 minutes - during step 3 to keep things moving.)

4. Once you have exhausted all your thoughts and knowledge go back to your book or notes and, using a different colour, jot down any important information you had forgotten. Ask your self why you have forgotten it and make an effort to go over it again and making it more interesting (add some moments, a picture or create a jingle about the forgotten work.)

5. An optional step is to add a frame of reference. Draw a large rectangle around the edge of your page. Inside this rectangle you can answer a question, for example, “How did I know this?”

Why not get them to do a circle map this afternoon about one of the topics that they have been learning about this term?
