Zakheni FM

Zakheni FM Zakheni FM is an educational project based in Orlando West (Soweto). 1. Learners are tutored and motivated to excel in all learning areas.

The project’s key focus is on Primary schools and its’ learners, the project was established in 2013 with the main objective of guiding children towards academic success. Saturday School
The programme is conducted every Saturday, starting from 09h00-13h00, and is currently offered to grade 6 and 7 learners. We offer learners educational assistance, particularly in Mathematics, Natural Sciences an

d English. However not only do we concentrate on academics, we also offer recreational activities through visual arts (drama, poetry, sports etc.). The core of our Saturday School programme is to offer mentorship and motivation for all pupils who partake in it. Most of our pupils are from disadvantaged homes, and a majority of them are raised by single parents, in some cases grandmothers are the primary care givers. Feeding schemes are provided by various schools that learners attend during the week; however a large number of learners remain without any proper meal on weekends. As an Organisation we try to provide them with a meal every Saturday and food parcels when we have extra. However due to a lack of funds and donations we find it challenging to give them meals every Saturday.

2. After school programme
The programme caters for learners between grades 1-7; learners are assisted with homework, assignments, reading and sporting activities. The performance of our learners is assessed and monitored on a daily basis, especially among the grade 6 and 7 learners, so that it can be easier to identify children who need academic assistance and offer extra assistance on Saturday’s to those who struggling to cope. The After School programme commences at 13h30-14h30 for grades 1-3 and 14h30-16h00 for grades 4-7. It is offered on weekdays, children are provided with a snack and sandwich. We request the following for the better functioning of the above mentioned programmes:
Food Items: Rice, maize meal, flour, cooking oil, lentils, tinned food, vegetables, butter, jam, peanut butter, meat, bread, fruits, Cheese, snacks etc. Basic Necessities:
• Stationery
• Cleaning products
• Books (reading suitable for grades 1-7)
• Toilet paper
• Toiletries
• Toys
• Baskets or containers for storage
• Carpet (Soft)
• Chairs
• (Bin bags)
• Tables

3. Camping Programme
The primary purpose of this excursion is to give the children a platform to discover themselves and unearth their hidden potential, as some will find it easy and conducive to learn and open up in an outdoor environment. We also want to test and encourage physical flexibility, determination, communication skills, mental strength and ability to work within teams. However this is not restricted to the enhancement of our learners, but also in growing Zakheni as a brand and reaching our ultimate goal of being a well-recognised NGO outreach project, which penetrates throughout the Soweto communities. In order to ensure the feasibility of this excursion, the following assistance is required;
 Financial sponsorship for accommodation, transport and food.
 The provision of people who can hold motivational talks with children.
 As well as goodie bags (be it books, stationery, etc.)

4. Tutors travelling costs
We have a team of 5 tutors’, form the University of the Witwatersrand. Namely Tebogo, Munaka, Lebo, Khosi and Mpilo, who tutor every Saturday. The tutoring is done through their involvement in the Wits Citizenship and Community outreach programme (WCCO). Tutors have travelling expenses since they travel from various destinations; hence assistance is also required in terms of covering the travelling expenses of tutors. The administration and facilitation of the tutoring is done by the founder of Zakheni, Ms Lorraine Strydom on a weekly basis in order to ensure the long term sustainability of the programme. We are a committed team of volunteers, who are passionate about children and education, we remain eager to ascertain that the organisation achieves its’ goals, not only to prosper but also for the betterment of the children’s future, by enabling them to develop self-awareness skills and a high self-esteem from an early age.
