You might be surprised to hear that English is actually my third language. The first language I learnt was Teochew and second was Vietnamese. I struggled with this problem when I was younger - most of the time at school I would barely speak English. And most of the day I'd spend thinking in Vietnamese. So the lesson I learnt over time was you have to immerse yourself in the language you want to learn moreso than your mother tongue if you want to speak with more clarity & speed in that language.
