Rietvlei 1 Primêr Primary School - Farmschool
(Principal: Clarence Swanepoel) Rietvlei 1 EC Primary serves a severely impoverished farming community.

Most children come from single parent homes in which parents are dependent on seasonal work or state grants. The level of poverty has led to the school being declared a ‘no fee school’ which provides the school with some state funding, but there is little money left for anything except the basic educational supplies. Social evils often encountered in impoverished rural communities such as this are

present too - foetal alcohol syndrome as a result of mothers who drink during pregnancy and hunger being the two that most effect learning in our school. Most of the parents are illiterate and are unable to support their children with homework. We are mostly dependent on support from funders outside the school as well as volunteers who come in to teach the children various hand skills. SCHOOLFEEDING:

The school has a school feeding scheme which is funded by the Education Department. Additional to this feeding scheme, we also receive soup from a local hotel. Volunteers from our white community arrange for the soup to be transported to the school once a week. We have obtained funds from a school in Holland to purchase tables for the pupils to sit at. (Many children do not have tables at their homes for them to enjoy a meal at.) We are also busy with the help of a sponsor from Holland to establish a small vegetable garden to supplement our current feeding scheme, and also to provide our children with valuable gardening & vegetable-growing skills.

Dankie aan ons plaaslike BRW Rotary Club !

In October last year, our Club assisted Rietvlei 1 by starting a 'Tree Planting / Propagation Project' at the school.
The trees in the nursery have now reached an adequate size and 25 were planted in and around the school in order to beautify and green the area, provide shade in summer, give added play-and-development opportunities to the children
