ADHD or trauma?

Sometimes the answer isn't as straightforward as people think.
Difficulty concentrating. Forgetfulness. Emotional overwhelm. Restlessness. Trouble sleeping.
These can occur in both ADHD and trauma, but the underlying reason isn't always the same.
That's why understanding why your brain is responding the way it is matters. The right understanding leads to the right support.
At TNISA, we developed the ADHD & Trauma Differential Assessment to help distinguish whether your experiences are more consistent with ADHD, trauma, or both.
We're incredibly proud that this exact assessment:

✔️ Was submitted to the American Psychiatric Association for consideration during future DSM revisions.

✔️ Has been accepted for presentation at the American Psychological Association Conference this year.

Assessment Investment: R500

This post is for education and awareness. It is not intended to diagnose ADHD or trauma. If these experiences resonate with you, a comprehensive assessment can provide greater clarity.

Happy Father’s Day from BRAIN™ 🧠💙

To the fathers raising children who experience the world differently, the deep thinkers, the movers, the sensitive hearts, the creative minds.

Your patience matters.
Your understanding matters.
Your presence becomes their safety.

ADHD & ASD are not limits. Different wiring needs different support.

Thank you for building a world where every brain feels seen.

Hi everyone

TNISA (Trauma Neuro Institute South Africa) has created something we are really excited to share with the neurodivergent community.

Introducing BRAIN™ - Behavioural Regulation & Action Intelligence Network.

It was built for neurodivergent minds (including ADHD and autistic individuals) who often find that traditional productivity systems were not designed around how their brains work.

Inside BRAIN™ you can:

Create your Brain Map™

Chat with BRI™ (your adaptive intelligence companion)

Break down tasks when you feel stuck

Create reminders for routines, food, breaks, medication, etc.

Record thoughts/classes/meetings and turn them into summaries

Work through growth challenges

Our goal is simple:

Instead of forcing your brain to fit the system, build systems that work with your brain.

We would love for the community to try it and share feedback 💙

“Why don’t they just stop?”

This is one of the most common questions asked about addiction. But addiction is not simply a lack of discipline, bad choices, or someone not caring enough about their future.

Addiction changes the brain.

Repeated exposure to addictive substances or behaviours affects the brain’s reward system, especially the circuits involved in dopamine, motivation, decision-making, memory, stress, and impulse control.

Over time, the brain begins to learn:

“I need this to cope.”
“I need this to feel okay.”
“I need this to escape.”

The same brain designed to protect you can become wired around survival and relief.

This is why many people continue even when they know they are losing relationships, careers, health, finances, and parts of themselves. The logical brain may understand the consequences, but the survival brain is chasing regulation.

Recovery is not only about removing the addiction.

It is about helping the brain heal.

It is about rebuilding:
• emotional regulation
• healthier coping mechanisms
• connection
• identity beyond addiction
• the ability to experience joy without depending on a substance or behaviour

At Trauma Neuro Institute of South Africa, we approach addiction by understanding the person behind the behaviour.

Because the question is not only:

“What are you addicted to?”

Sometimes the deeper question is:

“What pain, stress, trauma, or emptiness did your brain learn to survive through this?”

The brain can change.
The nervous system can heal.
Recovery is possible.

Many autism families and schools struggle to find practical support that actually reaches the child’s daily environment.

The Trauma Neuro Institute of South Africa is offering families and schools the opportunity to work with our Neuro Behavioural Technicians (NBTs) who are registered with the Health and Wellness Board of South Africa.

The process begins with a once-off online psychological assessment (R500) to understand the child’s needs and create a support plan. After that, an NBT will visit the home or school for 4 sessions (free) to help implement practical behavioural and regulation strategies.

This support can help caregivers and teachers better understand behaviour, emotional regulation, and everyday challenges children may experience.

If you are a family or school that may benefit, please contact us:
WhatsApp: 079 757 0393
Email: [email protected]

You are also welcome to share this with families who may need support.

Let’s debunk a harmful myth.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not caused by vaccines.

This belief has been thoroughly disproven by decades of global research involving millions of children. ASD is a neurodevelopmental condition influenced by genetics and early brain development, not immunisation.
The original study that linked vaccines to autism was found to be fraudulent and was officially retracted. Multiple large-scale studies since then have confirmed the same conclusion: vaccines do not cause autism.

Spreading this myth creates fear, reduces vaccination rates, and puts vulnerable children at risk of preventable diseases.
Let’s choose science over fear and facts over misinformation.
