Transformers only work with ALTERNATING CURRENT.
A transformer relies on a change in flux.
This only occurs because of AC current.

If DC current were to be used, there will not be a change in flux and therefore no induced voltage or current in the secondary transformer of the coil.

Faraday's Law
The emf induced is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux.
