As 2025 closes, we honour the teachers, practitioners, officials, and partners who make early grade learning possible. Your dedication strengthens the foundations of future leaders, and at ALLT Institute we are grateful to walk this journey with you.

This year we trained and coached 282 Lead Teachers across the Ngaka Modiri Molema District in Setswana Home Language and English First Additional Language. Working across Tswaing, Ditsobotla, Ratlou, Mahikeng, and Ramotshere Moiloa, these teachers showed remarkable commitment to improving literacy.

We also celebrate the handover of SACE Endorsed certificates with 60 CPTD points for 822 Teachers and 120 CPTD points, consisting of 60 points for teacher training and 60 points for the DHs coaching course, for 49 Departmental Heads in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District within the Greater Taung, Kagisano Molopo, and Naledi Sub Districts. The teachers and DHs were trained and coached in Setswana Home Language and English First Additional Language. Their growth reflects a shared commitment to stronger learning outcomes.

We extend appreciation to Department of Education officials, funders, and partners whose support ensures that children across South Africa receive meaningful learning opportunities.

As we enter the December break, we encourage all teachers and leaders to rest and reflect. Consider these questions
🔷 How have I grown in 2025?
🔷 What impact have I made on learners or colleagues?
🔷 What professional path do I want to shape for 2026?
🔷 How do I move towards the teacher I hope to become?

At ALLT Institute we remain committed to capacity building, strengthening African languages literacy, and supporting teachers through high quality coaching and training. To learn more, visit www.alltinstitute.co.za

Here is to rest, reflection, and a bold vision for 2026.

A critical and often downplayed problem is that early literacy “cracks” can quickly become "gaps” and then “chasms,” which become very difficult to address later on. This highlights the need for effective, ongoing, and immediate remediation based on early identification of difficulties. The need for strong foundational reading skills, especially in African Home Languages, is paramount.
Maintaining a clear distinction between assessment for improving learning (formative) and assessment for measuring learning (summative) is crucial for accurate data and effective feedback.

As we wrap up the year, let us think about what we will do in the coming year to support the way we handle literacy instruction, pedagogy and assessment.

The way we teach any subject often impacts the way we assess. Many teachers struggle with integrating instructional methods and relevant assessment types, especially in early-grade literacy development.
It is therefore important to provide teachers with the coherent framework and ongoing practical support needed to align teaching, activity development, and assessment for more impactful early literacy acquisition.
Let's continue to transform our classrooms and make assessment a natural part of learning!
At ALLT Institute, we are passionate about building teacher capacity through ongoing professional development.

Nurturing children’s mother tongue at the early stages of their development is one of the greatest investments in their future.

The Department of Basic Education continues to find ways to address the reading
challenges faced by our learners in Foundation Phase. One of the interventions that the Department is putting in place is to implement language specific strategies to address the reading crisis in Grade 1-3. It is important to support these initiatives to ensure that our learners become competent in literacy overall.

As institutions and stakeholders that support education, we need to be strategic and intentional in providing ongoing capacity building and skills development for our teachers and practitioners by collaborating with the entire education ecosystem.

Investing in skills development will contribute to the improvement of teaching and learning in our schools.

Nurturing the mother tongue at the early stages of children’s development is one of the greatest investments in their future. 🌍

At ALLT Institute (African Languages & Literacy Training Institute), we collaborate with education stakeholders including schools, NGOs, funders, and communities to strengthen literacy and numeracy through mother tongue-based bilingual learning.

When children’s mother tongue is nurtured, they gain the confidence to not only thrive in another language but also in their own lives. 💬
