On 16 June 1976, young people stood up against oppression and changed the course of South Africa’s history. Their fight was not only for the right to learn, but for the doors of education that would open for generations of learners, students and graduates to come.

Today, we honour their bravery, remember their sacrifice and recognise the legacy that lives on in every young person who continues to walk through the doors of education.

Youth Day reminds us that education is not just opportunity. It is freedom, dignity and the power to shape a better tomorrow.

Meet the Mind | Dr Sanele W. Nhlabatsi

For this edition of Meet the Mind, we spotlight Dr Sanele Nhlabatsi, Senior Lecturer in Project Management at UNISA SBL, whose academic voice continues to contribute to conversations on project delivery, sustainability and impact-driven leadership.

Dr Nhlabatsi recently participated in a webinar with the National Bank of Rwanda titled Navigating Complexity in Project Management: Leveraging M.O.R.E. and Sustainability for Impact-Driven Delivery.

The session explored how project delivery can be strengthened in increasingly complex environments, particularly within the central banking context where regulatory pressures, cross-border integration, evolving technologies and rising stakeholder expectations continue to shape institutional performance.

During the engagement, Dr Nhlabatsi introduced the M.O.R.E. mindset, calling for a shift from ex*****on excellence to value delivery:
M = Manage perceptions
O = Own success
R = Relentlessly reassess
E = Expand perspective

Her message was clear: success is not only when a system goes live, but when it is adopted, used at scale and creates meaningful impact for citizens.

Through her participation, Dr Nhlabatsi reflects the depth of academic thought leadership within UNISA SBL and the School’s continued contribution to project management practice, sustainable delivery and leadership development across the continent.

Graduation moments

The anticipation before the ceremony begins.
The conversations and laughter shared with friends.
The walk across the stage.
The handshake.
The applause.
The smile that follows.

These are the moments that make graduation more than a ceremony. They are reminders of the journeys travelled, the milestones achieved, and the memories created along the way.

Congratulations to our Master’s and Postgraduate Diploma graduates. May the pride of this achievement remain with you long after graduation day.

This was more than a graduation. It was a moment of pride, joy and well-earned recognition for every graduate who crossed that stage.

To our UNISA SBL PGD and master’s graduates, siyavuyisana nani. You walked in carrying years of discipline, sacrifice and determination, and walked out stepping boldly into a new chapter.

Sithi Halala!!!

Disclaimer: we simply could not resist the soundtrack because it is currently trending at our graduations.

Chancellor’s Address | UNISA Graduation 2026

As graduates continue to cross the stage during this graduation season, Prof Walter Matli, Executive Dean and CEO of the UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL), delivered a powerful Chancellor’s Address that challenged us to think differently about leadership.

His message was clear; leadership is not about titles or positions. It is about integrity, accountability, courage, and creating meaningful change where it matters most.

Addressing the realities of unemployment, inequality, governance, service delivery, and sustainable development, he reminded graduates that the future will be shaped by leaders who are willing to serve, solve problems, and make a difference in the lives of others.

“What is the point of a clean audit if the child still has no textbook? What is the point of a perfect tender process if the water still does not flow?”

As we celebrate the Class of 2026 and all those still to graduate in the coming weeks, may this be a reminder that a qualification is more than an achievement. It is an opportunity to lead with purpose and leave a lasting impact.

Congratulations, graduates. Your journey is only beginning.
