Nompumelelo Pre-School

Nompumelelo Pre-School Nompumelelo Pre-school serves a very impoverished and underprivileged Makhanda/Grahamstown location community. Currently we have 4 classes.

It truly is a beacon of light for early childhood development, for the children of our area. Despite the financial challenges the school faces, it provides exceptional educational and stimulation programmes for the children of Joza, of which we are extremely proud. It has three qualified ECD educators, a cook, a volunteer and a gardener. The ECD educators are all very passionate about the children

they cater for and serve. Nompumelelo Pre-School also provides meals daily for the children, which are hearty and nutritional. Most importantly, the school is a safe haven and environment in which to learn. In keeping with the core business of Child Welfare, that is child protection, the Nompumelelo Pre- school, started the year by enrolling 60 children, with ages ranging from 18 months to 4 years. Our school, which falls under the Nompumelelo Child Protection & Enrichment centre, is of greatest value to our community and organisations working in the Grahamstown community. Apart from the centre providing a conducive and safe environment for children’s learning and education, the centre is a facility where training and development takes place through workshops and enrichment activities. We are dedicated to only further establishing our centre of excellence for children and their families in Joza; one that will not only be a wonderful community resource but one that will provide growth and development to individuals and families through education and training. The Nompumelelo pre-school has been a dream of Child Welfare SA Grahamstown for many years. Grahamstown is a town with a population of approximately 100 000 people. There is an alarmingly high rate of unemployment in this area with the majority of the population in the Eastern Cape depending solely on government social grants. Alcohol abuse, child abuse, neglect, abandonment and teenage pregnancy is the order of the day. These problems are not going away anytime soon unless vigorous attempts at addressing these issues are made by the NPO sector and government. Child Welfare SA Grahamstown is an NPO that has been in existence for over a century. The organisation celebrated it’s 100 years in 2017. The organisation has a duty stemming from its vocation, to find a way to educate the Grahamstown community before these issues simply increase and their impacts are further exacerbated. Our solution is through education, to prevent and eradicate the instances of abuse and neglect by working closely with parents. In this way we can build the individual families and the community as a whole, by providing a safe environment for their children and by getting them involved in their children’s school life. Our organisation holds firmly onto the belief that prevention is better than cure. This belief has fuelled our drive for our school to be one of the very best, aimed at education and capacity building of the community as a whole.

A very big thank you to many caring souls who knitted beanies for our annual Winter Drive. Sally Marais knitted the most and we say a big thank you to her - but also thank you to everyone who donated each and every beanie.
