1990: The establishment of the Centre for Peace Action

The highly successful 4th Community Violence Prevention Summit was co-hosted by the ISHS, SAMRC/Unisa VISARU, Building Bridges and the Local Network of Care on 29 May 2026. The keynote address by Rev Dr Llwewllyn MacMaster highlighted that safety is not only the absence of crime but the presence of justice, hope and belonging in our communities. When hope survives, transformation is possible.

Another presentation by Prof. Taliep and Mrs James’ on the Community Safety and Peace Index (CSPI), a contextually relevant and psychometrically sound tool which measures community safety and peace, introduced the newly developed CSPI mobile app.

This was followed by an engaging panel discussion emphasising violence as multilayered in nature and complex. The panellists identified common drivers of violence, including lack of parental care and support for children, and systemic social challenges.
