I love people who celebrate things…The big things, the little things, the messy things, the moments that don’t need a reason at all.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in a family where we celebrated everything - and I’ve carried that with me.
So we absolutely loved curating this session for this beautiful little family. From the very beginning to the very end, they were completely entertained, immersed and, most importantly, having FUN. 🤍

Creating beautiful little moments, making memories and finding a reason to celebrate, I really can’t think of anything nicer ❤️ Thank you for letting us be part of the magic.

We know we’ve been a little quiet on here lately. 🤍 Social media takes time - and that’s not something we’ve had much of lately.

It’s taken a while to process everything, but it finally feels like we can breathe again, so I thought it was a good time to just be real.

In January, we found what we genuinely believed would be our dream home. Little did we know, we’d signed ourselves into a bit of a horror story.

Unapproved plans. Invalid certificates. Electrical and gas issues. Concealed damp. Termites… the list goes on.
The house transferred, we started paying the bond, and yet we couldn’t live in it, let alone renovate it. It’s been months of inspections, phone calls, legal meetings and an exhausting amount of uncertainty. My mental health took a huge turn.

It consumed so much of our time and headspace that, for a while, I simply didn’t have much left for social media.
So if we’ve been slow to reply, missed a message or been quieter than usual, you’ll know why. We had to triage.

And in the meantime, life kept happening. So many exciting things were happening around us - celebrations, milestones, family moments - and we feel like we’ve missed so much of it because being ‘present’ felt impossible 🤍

The families who kept supporting Happy-Mess were actually one of the things that kept me going. After six electrical inspections (yes… SIX 😩), we are finally compliant. And last week, we finally got the go-ahead to start working on our home. It still feels surreal.

There’s a huge mountain ahead, but after all the fighting and waiting, we’re finally moving forward. We even ended the week celebrating a very long-awaited family event. 🤍 For the first time in a long time, it feels like life is finally moving in the right direction.

One little side note…our realtor was amazing throughout all of this. We genuinely couldn’t fault her. Everyone else involved could probably take a few notes. 😂

So… hi. 👋🏽 Thank you for being patient with us while we’ve been navigating all of this. It really has meant more than you know.

Things are finally looking up, and we are so ready for it! 🤍 Now, let’s get back to m

There’s something about watching them play that makes you wish you could freeze time for just a little while. 🥹💛

The messy hands.
The tiny giggles.
The trays scattered across the table.

Those little faces completely lost in what they’re doing.
Because one day, these little moments will be the ones we look back on.

We’ll scroll through the photos and remember how little they were.
We’ll hear their tiny voices in old videos and be transported straight back.
And somehow, these messy, noisy, beautifully chaotic days will become the memories we treasure most.
That’s a big part of why Happy-Mess means so much to me.

It’s never only been about sensory play. It’s about creating little pockets of childhood where they can explore, get messy, use their imaginations and simply be little.
So let them get messy.
Let them explore.
Take the photos.
Save the videos.
And soak up every beautifully chaotic second. 🤍
Because the mess can always be cleaned up.
The childhood goes by far too quickly.
Love,
Mals x

💨 This party moved at SONIC speed! 💨💙

I love curating play experiences, especially when I get to take a vision and turn it into something where the kiddos are completely immersed in play from beginning to end. That feels like a win! 🥹

It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it also shouldn’t feel like a one-size-fits-all setup. For me, it’s about intention - creating activities around your little one, what they love and what will make their day feel special.

For this Sonic-loving birthday boy, we had squishy playdough and golden rings, scooping, mixing, rolling and a little sensory potion-making.

And because I love the little details, each kiddo also got a Sonic stamp to take home, along with a jar of homemade playdough - free of nasties and packed with love.

Watching little ones get completely stuck into play, use their imaginations and just HAVE FUN (even when things get a little messy!) is the best part. 🥹

Happy 5th Birthday Mhlengi! 🎉 I hope you had the best day, filled with lots of fun, laughter and Sonic-speed adventures!

Thank you to mom Phindile for letting HappyMess be part of this special day and for being such a welcoming host! We can’t wait for the next one!

Mum had a clear vision for the day, and we made it our mission to bring it to life.

The brief? Adventure, travel and a little bit of wonder.
So we filled the setup with aeroplanes, hot-air balloons, clouds, colourful rice and plenty of textures for tiny hands to discover.

We opted for dry play only, so Mum had one less thing to worry about and could simply enjoy the day with her little birthday boy.

I loved putting this one together because it’s such a sweet reminder that sensory play can be so many things. It can be messy, yes. But it can also be imaginative, beautifully themed and completely woven into the feel of a celebration.

A little bit of adventure, a little bit of curiosity and a whole lot of play.

Happy first birthday, Shivram. 🤍

Thank you for letting Happy-Mess be part of the magic!

Much love,
Mals x

The details. So many details.

Who eats what? Who’s allergic to what? Who is happy to get messy? Will the little ones do what the big ones do? Will the big kids be bored?

And that’s all before you’ve even picked the venue 🙈

Mom Gabby had one vision for the day, and it stayed the same through every conversation (and there were many!) — she wanted her little boy to have the absolute best time.

We went through our experiences a few times, tweaking and changing things until we had something that felt just right for her vision. Mum knows best… and she was absolutely right. It was perfect.

Armaan and his friends could not stop getting messy. We literally had to chase them around to get everything packed up at the end because they were having way too much fun to leave 😂

The whole day was filled with laughter, lots of love and delicious food! I’ve tagged the vendors below because why not ;)

Gabriella Ryan ☁️, thank you for being such a gracious host, for trusting us, and for letting us be part of such a special day. We are so grateful for you! 🤍

FYI, we notice the details. The effort. The intent. 🥰

📍 Venue: Connections Coffee Lounge - lovely venue just south of Durbs.

☕️ Coffee cart: The Barn Owl Coffee - thank you for the delicious coffee!

🧇 Live stations: Table Of Us - the waffles were SO, so good!

Only 12million more reels to edit 🤣🤣🤣 Wish me luck! 😂

I really love a beautifully curated session, where the details match your theme, the colours mirror your palette perfectly and every little detail has been considered.

I spend so much time carefully setting up every little dinosaur, fossil, scoop and sensory tray… but honestly, nothing makes me happier than seeing it completely dino-stroyed by the end of the session. 🦕🦖

This is actually my favourite kind of mess.

To me, a messy station means little hands have been digging, pouring, squishing, exploring and creating their own prehistoric adventures.

It means they felt comfortable enough to get involved.
It means curiosity took over.
It means imaginations were running wild.
It means the setup did exactly what it was created to do.

I never expect everything to stay picture-perfect. The real magic happens when the dinosaurs have moved, the sand is everywhere, the colours are mixed and the children are completely lost in play.

So yes, I love a beautifully prepared setup… but I love the wonderfully messy aftermath even more.

Because that is when I know we had a truly roar-some time. 🦖💚

🌈 A little behind the scenes...

When we first started Happy-Mess, I wasn’t convinced that shorter sensory sessions could offer the same magic as our longer workshops. Then we started popping up at local markets...

Back then, Happy-Mess was just two mums and two incredibly patient husbands, juggling workshops, birthday parties, markets and family life. We loved the buzz of market days, but there simply weren’t enough hands to do it all well.

As Happy-Mess has grown, so has our amazing team, and they’ve made it possible for us to bring back something we’ve missed Pop-Up Play Shops💛

Watching children become completely absorbed in play within minutes changed my perspective. It reminded me that meaningful play doesn’t always need hours. Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful invitation to play, a little curiosity and the freedom to explore.

That’s what I love most about this format-it’s flexible, intimate and gives us the opportunity to offer multiple sensory themes, smaller groups and fresh invitations to play throughout the day.
