Test (area, volume, specification, take off, bill of quantity)

This was our last face-to-face class before study week. In today's class, we were writing a revision test to prepare us for the examination. The aim of the test was to familiarise us with exam questions and how to tackle them. After the class, our lecturer had a memorandum for us to reflect on and see where we went wrong and how careless the mistake we do, and helped us to avoid them in the examination. For us students, it was extremely helpful.

Presentation progress

In preparation for the presentation, in today's lecture we were looking at the structure and templates we will be using to make the presentation presentable and easy to understand by a third party. We were sorting our work in consecutive order that visually communicates the start and the inspiration of the concept to the gradual process of incorporating it into the design process to produce the final plan.

Finalizing with component detailing

In continuation from the detailed plan, elevation, and section with two detailed components for each assignment. In today’s class, we transferred the AutoCAD detailed drawing to photoshop for rendering and giving life to the drawing to allow a third party to easily understand what the drawing is about. Rendering is also about improving the quality of work we do.

Draft essay

In continuation from the referencing, literature review, importance of formal writing, and development of a good essay question assignment. Today’s class was finally the time for us to apply what we have learned so far. We were tasked to start writing our drafts using the sources we reviewed and more if you want. We were told to reference back to the assignment we did and use them as guidelines to help us draft our essay which counts for 50% of our semester.

Plant Material Studies

Pruning

In today’s lecture we were introduced to pruning as in the field we will be working with plants. Pruning is defined as a horticultural practice involving the selective removal of certain branches, roots, and buds. This practice targeted on removing the dead, damaged, diseased, no productive, and unwanted plant material. The session was to teach us how to take care and manage plants to produce a desired product.

Detailed plan, elevation, and sections

In continuation of our detailed section, in today’s class, we were tasked to choose two important components and draw two detailed drawings showing how the component is constructed and functions. I decided to choose a bench and timber decking to show how they are attached together and what material is used to construct them, lastly how the material used to construct them contributes to my concept.

Transferring the AutoCAD section to photoshop

In continuation of the AutoCAD section for our rooftop garden design, in today’s class, we are transferring the section to photoshop for rendering. As always photoshop has some challenges and difficulties but since we are now getting familiar with the program our rendering skills have improved and the quality of work is starting to show. The aim is to improve our rendering and the quality of work and for me, we are winning because the work speaks for itself.

Planting plan final

In continuation from the introduction to the planting plan and the first draft of the planting plan. in today’s I was improving my planting plan and adding more elements like the names of the plants as at first it was just pictured. We were also required to add plant density, size, and tree staking to show understanding of the plants and how they are planted in a site. We hand to specify everything that is involved in the planting plan as we were informed that we must design a planting plan that can be used for tender.

Tree lists

Today we had a trees identification class on campus where we were introduced to a variety of tree species. We were taught about their different growing conditions, flowering seasons, soil types, water requirements, leaves texture, flower color, leaf shape, and more. We also walk through the campus and identify all the trees that we covered in class and get a chance to see, touch, and feel them.

Skeleton essay/outline

In continuation from the referencing, literature review, importance of formal writing, and development of a good essay question assignment. In today’s class, we were focusing on the structure of our essays. We were arranging our paragraphs and points to be in chronological order for readers to understand where the direction of the essay is going. We were also working on keeping the essay interesting for readers to be hooked.

AutoCAD Section drawings

In continuation from the hand drawing of a detailed section assignment. In today’s class, we were asked to transfer the hand drawing sketches to AutoCAD as we did with the sketch plan. The aim is for us to improve and polish both our AutoCAD and hand drawing abilities while at the same time understanding the importance of using the digital program to improve the quality of our work.
