🍷The DipWSET Alumni Africa Chapter held tastings in both the Western Cape and Gauteng earlier this month. This was the first time for the seven alumni based in Gauteng to get together and they invited the current two Gauteng-based WSET Level 4 Award in Wines Diploma students to join in as well.
📅Tuesday 6 May

🍇Western Cape
Thank you to Abri du Preez DipWSET for putting together the Western Cape tasting. The Alumni tasted a selection of aged Sauvignon Blanc tutored by Bartho Eksteen.
Andrew Mellish of Mellish Family Vineyards summarised that
“On Wednesday night I had the privilege of taking part in a blind tasting of 10 wines presented by the legendary winemaker Bartho Eksteen. The theme was the ageability of Sauvignon Blanc.
The vintages of the wines spanned from 2013 to 2021 with wines from France, South Africa and Chile.
It was wonderful to listen to the vast knowledge, personal stories and experience of Bartho whilst tasting through the wines. Bartho had four of his wines in the line up and they showed particularly well with my personal top two wines all coming from his stable. They were the Vloekskoot 2013 and Houtskool 2017. These wines were ethereal, complex wines that showed that great Sauvignon Blanc can indeed benefit from aging in the bottle.”

🍇Gauteng
An enormous thank you to Peter Andrews from Culture Wine Co and Hella Chenin in California for bringing us four Chenin’s from the USA. In Gauteng the Alumni tasted:
🍷Iruai Moonstones from Oregon
🍷Sandlands Amador County
🍷Margins Clarksburg
🍷Fine Disregard Chalone Vineyard, Monterey County
🍷This was long side four Loire examples shared by Ina Smithand four South African benchmarks from Chenin Blanc Association

This was a truly fascinating tasting and so exciting to see the US following in our footsteps with these modern styles of Chenin Blanc!
We look forward to repeating this Chenin tasting in the Western Cape later in the year.

🍷WSET Diploma Alumni Africa Chapter
📌Hartenberg Wine Estate
🗓️18 March 2026

Last month Hartenberg Wine Estate hosted the Africa Chapter of the WSET Diploma Alumni. Hartenberg is the first estate in South Africa to be scientifically verified for regenerative viticulture, and only the third in the world to achieve this distinction - which made the presentation by Reynie Oosthuizen, Head Winemaker, all the more exciting, but also globally significant. 🐄🍇👏

Reynie unpacked:
- how regenerative viticulture, from soil biology and grazing systems to biodiversity and ecological outcomes, is implemented in practice
- how that feeds through into structure, balance and expression in the glass.

A highlight of the experience was tasting trial wines that demonstrated the impact of animals on the vineyards. This offered a rare opportunity to explore if / how regenerative practice can translate into the glass.

Thank you to Heleen Rabe, Sales & Marketing Director at Hartenberg and fellow DipWSET, for hosting us and for bringing this together, making Reynie’s talk and tasting possible.

Cheers Hartenberg Wine Estate

We look forward to our next Alumni Africa Chapter meet up on October 14th.
