Holistic Early Learning Resources, Inspiration + Teacher Training in South Africa 🌿

When we work with teachers and encourage more observation than instruction—or invite them to lean into child-led play—one question comes up again and again: “So what’s my role then?”

It’s a valid question. And the truth is, your role may look very different from what you were trained to believe, but it’s no less important. In fact, it’s more meaningful & impactful than you may realize.

Yes, we want children to take the lead in their play. We want them making messes, solving problems, moving their bodies, & discovering the world on their terms. But that doesn’t mean adults step back entirely. Children still need the steady, kind, & confident presence of a teacher who provides structure, upholds predictable routines, & sets clear, respectful boundaries.

Young children are in the thick of learning how to manage their emotions & navigate relationships. They need adults who can sit beside them in big feelings—not fix them, not shut them down, but help them feel safe enough to move through them. That kind of support requires patience, reflection, & emotional regulation from us too.

When children are immersed in big physical play, we’re not passive observers. We stay aware. “What’s your plan?” becomes a powerful prompt to help children build body awareness & make intentional choices.

At the same time, we’re curating & adjusting an environment that feels both comforting & rich with possibility. We create spaces that invite exploration, experimentation, & joy, where children feel safe enough to take risks & free enough to follow their curiosity.

A teacher’s role extends beyond what we say or do. It lives in the tone we set, the space we hold, & the trust we build. Through observation, we learn how each child moves through the world. That allows us to better support them & to communicate their growth to families.

This kind of teaching is deep work. It’s relational, intentional, and responsive. It’s about connection, trust, and growth. And it’s literally wiring the child’s brain to form safe relationships, build confidence, & sustain a lifelong love of learning.

It’s not about filling time with activities or filling children with information. It’s about holding space for real development to unfold. That takes skill, presence, & heart. That’s the work. That’s the role. And it matters more than most people truly understand—because how we guide children now shapes who they become for the rest of their lives. ❤️

We’ve been exploring SHAPES through hands-on play + exploration!

🟦🔺🟢🔶♦️🟪

The children are making real-world connections that spark curiosity + understanding ✨

Finding squares in windows, rectangles in doors, and circles in wheels + bowls… we’re having ALL THE FUN!

Encourage children to see shapes as not just abstract forms, but as meaningful parts of their environment ▪️

You may like to ask thoughtful questions like:

🔹 “Can you find something round in our classroom?”
🔹 “Does this ____ look like something we’ve seen before?”
🔹 “What shape is that window / door / __?”
