Practical fieldwork camp for the whole family. Parys/ Vredefort impact story 14 to 16 February 2025.
Practical fieldwork forms a vital part of any balanced educational program for kids. Parents sharing in these practical experiences, is even more important. With this in mind, booking is now open for our next highly practical fieldwork camp taking place on a farm outside Parys between 14 and 16 February 2025. Catering for the whole family makes it an ideal opportunity for parents to share in many of the practical experiences with their kids. Many themes are also accredited by those following Kairos, or other curricula where credits can be earned for fieldwork. Topics for credits.
• Overview of the Vredefort impact event. Various aspects of physics.
• Orienteering using compasses.
• Topographical and geological mapping.
• Basic mineral and rock identification in the field and related to the mapping.
• Practical astronomy.
• Scaling down the solar system walk.
• Various chores related to camping.
These then added to round off the learning experience:
• Understanding seasons and phases of the moon.
• Games, stalk the lantern, swimming.
• Live night-time practical chemistry demonstration.
• The launch of a real rocket.
Please see the basic details covered in the ads included. Please contact Barry Bryant directly (082 331 8194 Whatsapp) via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Educationsupport1 to register and for more information regarding the program, menu and more. KZN Battlefields/ Northern Berg/ Golden Gate 08 to 16 March 2025. Educational, family-focused, camping excursion: Focussed mainly on home school families where kids need practical fieldwork exposure as part of their curricula.
Join us for this unique excursion which combines a series of nightly workshops covering a broad swath of South African history background and context, while visiting 5 of the major battle sites in Northern KZN. These workshops then change focus to cover the geology of the Karoo Supergroup, topographical mapping in the area, the pump storage schemes of the escarpment, and finally the groundwork for our guided tour of the dinosaur fossil sites in the Golden Gate Area. These workshops are then practically brought to life as we hike and work in the shadow of some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa. As with all my excursions, this excursion offers home school families a wide selection of topics and content for those doing Kairos or other curricula, where credits can be earned. This is for both theoretical and practical components covered in this tour.
Highlights of this tour;
•In our build-up to this tour kids will participate in up to 4 online introductory workshops covering the theoretical background in preparation for the tour. They will receive basic notes with predominantly map-based exercises to prepare them for this educational excursion.
• Visits to 5 battlefields covering 3 separate conflicts fought in the area. These played a major role in shaping modern SA.
• We will hike the famous Majuba Hill. This is the scene of the final battle closing the First Anglo Boer War. We will hike the spectacular Tugela Gorge in Royal Natal Highland Park. Finally we tackle some of the spectacular hikes in Golden Gate. This together with a visit to a dinosaur fossil site under the guidance of the top expert in this field; Prof Gideon Groenewalt.
• Added to all this kids will be completing maps covering history, geology, mapping and more as well process through the area.

Share precious moments as a family as you experience the wonders hidden in this 8 day educational tour. Contact Barry Bryant directly on 082 331 8194 or join the info group for more details and to enrolll. Or join the information group on WhatsApp.

We'd like you to join us for our final outing for the year. Learn the amazing story of the Struben brothers and the opening of the 1st goldmine on the Witwatersrand in 1885. Wonder through the old workings as Rod Kruger tells the amazing story. Sadly, although finding a little payable gold, this mine had not yet struck the main reef discovered in February 1886 on a farm a few km to the South, Langlaagete. The visit will be combined with some of the amazing ecology walks in the reserve. We will end -off in sharing our packed lunch together as a final conclusion to a good year of outings. Please contact Barry Bryant directly on 082 331 8194 via WhatsApp if you can join us.
