We had a great time yesterday hosting a culinary activity at the party of a 5 year old boy. The theme was our popular Takeaways With A Twist, so the group consisting of 27 kids between the ages of 2 and 11 years, made cupcake batter from scratch and decorated the baked cupcakes to look like hamburgers with buttercream icing. They also decorated pizza slice-shaped sugar cookies and soccer boot-shaped sugar cookies with royal icing. Fun was had by all!

During the party the group learnt how to measure accurately, how to assemble piping bags, how to pipe buttercream icing, how to outline and flood with royal icing, etc. The party took place at Eagle Canyon Golf Estate, Jhb.

If you are looking for a unique activity to keep the kids busy at your child's next birthday, look no further. Our culinary birthday parties are popular with kids and adults alike. Kids love it because we teach them cool culinary stuff and adults like it because we do all the work so that they can relax and enjoy the party too! We provide a mobile culinary service, so we come to you.

The theme was Stranger Things, so the group consisting of 14 kids between the ages of 6 and 12 years, made cupcake batter from scratch and decorated the baked cupcakes with vanilla buttercream icing and candy to look like Christmas lights. We had a great time today facilitating an Easter-themed culinary activity on the eve of Easter weekend. It took place at the Lifestyle Montessori Pre & Primary School in Sunninghill. The group, consisting of over 40 kids aged 3 to 13, decorated a bunny-shaped sugar cookie with royal icing. They learnt how to pipe a border on a sugar cookie with royal icing, how to flood the cookie with royal icing and how to pipe details onto the cookie. The group had a blast - we did too!

The Gin Revolution 02/03/2026

It was great fun doing the research for this Newsletter (November 2017). In the newsletter I predicted that gin is here to stay. I guess I was right!
While many might believe Gin has its origins in Britain – perhaps due to the classic London Dry Gin – the spirit originally came from Holland. The name β€˜gin’ in fact is the English translation of the Dutch word β€˜jenever’ for juniper. Gin was created by Dutch physician Dr. Sylvius in the 1650’s. He redistilled pure alcohol with juniper berries in the hope that the berries’ therapeutic oil would manifest in a low-cost medicine to treat stomach ache, gout, etc. Juniper berries have many more uses than just flavouring gin and treating stomach ache though. In cooking, Juniper berries bring a sharp, slightly bitter and β€œpine-like” flavour to food. The flavour of Juniper berries is similar to that of rosemary, but with more citrus-y overtones. It is used in Northern European and Scandinavian cuisine to impart a tart flavor to brines and meat dishes. In the newsletter you will find recipes for home-made tonic water, a variety of cocktails with gin as an ingredient and desserts like ice-cream and cheesecake that has gin in it.

Enjoy!
