📌Multi-Services Request for Proposals: Prototyping a Standardised Approach for Extended Student Teacher Internships
TICZA invites proposals for the prototyping phase focused on institutionalising ESTIs within South African ITE policies and practices. The prototyping process aims to contribute directly to systemic improvement and inform national policy instruments such as MRTEQ reviews, WIL frameworks, FLBP refinements, and teacher placement systems.

The final webinar in the 2025 Nascee-TICZA series, “The Proof is in the Prototype”, marked an exciting milestone in the five-year TICZA journey. TICZA is now transitioning from years of discovery, design and collaborative model-building into the test phase, where the Standardised Extended Student Teacher Internship (ESTI) model will be prototyped and tested “in the wild.”
What stands out strongly is the shared commitment across government, NGOs, HEIs, funders, SACE, and unions to building an evidence-driven approach to strengthening teacher preparation in South Africa. From establishing common competencies to aligning wrap-around support, the sector has collectively shaped a model that is now ready to demonstrate its relevance, consistency, and practicality in real-world contexts.
We look forward to the next chapter - putting the prototype to the test in 2026 and generating the insights needed to inform policy, funding models, and long-term systems change.

🔈Request for Proposals: The Teacher Internship Collaboration South Africa (TICZA) is inviting proposals from consortia of public universities offering distance B.Ed Foundation Phase programmes and registered non-profit implementing partners who provide essential wraparound support to registered B.Ed students.
This 24-month research study (2026–2028) will prototype the standardised extended student teacher internship (ESTI) model, developed by TICZA which strengthens work-integrated learning and teaching practice through extended, school-based internships.

We are pleased to launch the research report “Essential Wrap-Around Support for Extended Student Teacher Internships”, authored by Robyn McQueen, a Project Mentor at Khanyisa Inanda Seminary Community Projects as part of the TICZA initiative.
This publication positions essential wrap-around support (EWAS) within the Extended Student Teacher Internship (ESTI) framework, aimed at strengthening the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component of initial teacher education (ITE) in South Africa particularly for students in distance education. EWAS emphasises extended WIL periods and offers professional, academic and emotional support for student teachers, running parallel to higher education institution modules. This type of WIL is designed to help student teachers put theory into practice, enhancing their classroom and professional conduct with social-emotional awareness and digital competence.
