This heritage day, I decided to pay homage to Mlabalaba, the board game that is proudly displayed on the cover of my book. Consultants and friends advised me to use a chess board or a chess piece. After I shared the rich history of Mlabalaba with them, they changed their views. Knowing our rich heritage makes us appreciate and value African creations.
Morabaraba is a timeless treasure—a game that has woven itself into the rich tapestry of African heritage. Its origins are shrouded in the mists of time, some say the game is older than the pyramids of Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the great wall of Benin, which is the longest wall that has ever been built.
The history of Morabaraba is as ancient as Africa itself. Archaeological discoveries have unearthed evidence of the game being played many centuries ago, bearing witness to its enduring nature. Known by various names across the continent, such as Mlabalaba,Morabaraba, Muravava, Achi and Mbau. Morabaraba has etched its presence across Africa, carrying with its stories of tradition, culture, and unity. Morabaraba has been a beacon of social interaction and communal bonding.
In the heart of many African communities, Morabaraba is not merely a game; it is a teacher, imparting wisdom and fostering strategic thinking among the young and old alike. Children learn to plan, strategize, and outmanoeuvre their opponents, skills that transcend the wooden board and become life lessons.

In the game's twelve holes and countless strategies, we find not just pieces of wood but fragments of history and tradition. This timeless game encapsulates the essence of intelligence, strategic thinking, unity, cultural pride, and the spirit of Africa. It beckons us to remember our roots, to celebrate the wisdom of our ancestors, and to pass down the joy and lessons of Morabaraba to future generations.
