Meet the winner! In first place, Bethlehem Belay from Hyde Park High School presented an innovative idea that combines environmental consciousness with regional cooperation, all while using materials science as its foundation.
Her solution showed how energy could be harnessed to supply unlimited electricity to homes across Mzansi using solar farms and wind forests as sustainable and responsible generation sources. Progressive and innovative? We agree! Congratulations Bethlehem!

Meet the winner! In second place, Tshepiso Kola from Zitikeni Secondary School 1632 presented an awesome idea that uses material science to create electricity from the metabolic processes of bacteria.
His poster explained how he would use a galvanic cell and place the bacteria in the anode chamber to produce electrons, which would be collected to generate sustainable and continuously available electricity. Tshepiso did an incredible job of presenting to the panel of judges, making his mark as a scientist for the future. Mzansi, the future is in safe hands!

Meet the winners! In third place, the team of Rebanngwe Ngulele, Kgomotso Ramachela, Sisanda Dubula, and Lindelani Mutavhatsindi, grade 11 learners from Norkem Park High School presented an incredible idea that uses sustainable electricity supply from the friction of mobile vehicles to generate an unlimited supply of electricity to harvest energy through pavements and roadways. This is also known as the Piezoelectric Effect.
Their poster presented the advantages and disadvantages of the Piezoelectric Effect and how materials science can help bring about sustainable generation, which can power millions of homes across Mzansi. With ideas and clarity such as this, it's safe to say that the future of science is in good hands!

Materials science is a field that explores the properties, uses and behaviour of different materials. To put it simply, it's all about understanding why materials are the way they are and how we can use them to create things.
Witsie Karabo Goba tells us a little more about materials science, and why high school learners in GP should consider it as a field of study.
There is still time to register to attend our Career and Lab Demo Day that will take place on 19 July at Wits Campus. If you are in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 and are interested in science, come through and spend some time with students, lecturers and working scientists!
