We spend our days helping others to learn. This time, we were the learners.

On 28 August, the Wordworks team headed to Bo-Kaap for our Wellness session.

We walked, listened to stories about the history of the neighbourhood, asked questions, and then took on a new challenge: making a Cape Malay dish.

A good day of learning, connection and a reminder that sometimes, we need to step away from the work and make space to experience something new too.

Today, Wordworks mourns the loss of our partner, Juffrou Annalie, Principal of Eastrehof Kleuterskool in the beautiful community of Riebeek Kasteel.

For the past two and a half years, we had the privilege of working alongside the remarkable Annalie as part of the Sanlam project.

From the beginning, Annalie was enthusiastic, proactive and deeply committed to making a difference. She believed wholeheartedly in the Every Word Counts (EWC) and Little Stars programmes, supporting her practitioners at the school as well as those at neighbouring centres. She went far beyond what was expected, bringing the EWC programme into the wider community and involving parents, grandparents, siblings and caregivers in her mission to support children’s learning.

She often shared beautiful stories of how the programme was changing lives, reminding us of the powerful impact that one passionate person can have.

We are deeply saddened by her passing and will remember her for her commitment, passion and the difference she made in her community.

Our heartfelt condolences go to her family, colleagues, friends and the wider Riebeek Kasteel community.

Applications now open! Dr. Shelley O'Carroll Early Literacy Award!!!

Wordworks, in collaboration with the Literacy Association of South Africa, is proud to announce that applications for the Dr. Shelley O’Carroll Early Literacy Award are now open!

The award recognises individuals, projects, organisations, units/centres and teams whose research and/or practice contributes to the development and support of young children’s literacy in South Africa.

About the Award
This award is made to an individual, project, organisation, unit/centre, or team whose research and/or practice has contributed to understandings of how the literacy of young South African children can be developed and supported. The award recognises work across resourced and under-resourced contexts, including work with children and population groups, different language groups, and traditional and non-traditional spaces for literacy.
