Looking back, I can clearly see how the people around me shaped the way I saw myself.
There were seasons when my self-esteem was low, my confidence was fragile, and I struggled to manage my emotions. At the time, I didn't realise how deeply my environment was influencing my thoughts, my feelings, and my behaviour.
Over time, I noticed something.
After spending time with certain people, I felt lighter. I had more hope, more patience, more courage, and a greater desire to grow.
At other times, after spending time with different people, I felt drained. I questioned myself. My peace disappeared. I became more reactive, more anxious, and less like the person I wanted to be.
That's when I realised something that changed the way I viewed relationships.
The people around us don't just influence our conversations.
They influence our thoughts, our emotions, our habits, our beliefs, and ultimately, the way we see ourselves.
They can normalise gratitude or normalise complaining. They can encourage accountability or make excuses feel acceptable. They can challenge us to grow or keep us comfortable where we are.
The same is true of emotional intelligence.
It develops in the environments where we spend our time. When we surround ourselves with people who communicate with respect, take responsibility for their actions, listen before reacting, and value personal growth, those qualities begin to take shape in us as well.
None of us will ever be surrounded by perfect people.
The question is:
Are the people in my life helping me become the person I want to be?
Your circle is more than a social network. It is an emotional environment. Choose it intentionally.
Protect it wisely.
Every environment shapes someone. Make sure yours is shaping you into the person you want to become.
