Talk English has now closed due to covid and ill-health of some staff. Apologies and best wishes to all our current and potential students.
Talk English, a volunteer-run NPO offering English lessons and teaching services in Durban, are looking for someone with drive and enthusiasm to take over the organisation, with help from the current management. To qualify, you must have a CELTA or TEFL qualification, or foreign
language teaching experience.
The Talk English project was initiated in August 2005 by Dr. Julie Douglas and Sarah Ralfe, who had recently completed their CELTA training course. Over its 17 years of operation it has been very popular with South Africans and refugees in the greater Durban area, needing to learn English. Thousands have benefited from absolute beginners to those needing better professional English.
However, we unfortunately have been unable to open again since lockdown in March 2020, due to Covid, and unforeseen circumstances.
Should you be interested, please leave a message here,
OR email Dr. Julie Douglas: [email protected]
We'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you

Dear Talk English students, teachers and friends.
I'm very sad to have to tell you that our dear administrator Cheryl died last week after a long, hard battle with cancer. She was loved by many and will be missed by her friends, colleagues, and especially the students and teachers of Talk English.
Unfortunately we are still unable to open our classes again. We're hoping for early 2022.

It's time to grasp another idiom!
Was there an instance that you flew off the handle in a very irritable situation? If yes, when and what was it?
To fly off the handle means to lose one's temper suddenly and unexpectedly.
Always remember that whenever you are upset, you should learn how to handle your emotions before the situation gets worse!
Talk English cannot begin lessons again due to Covid restrictions. We hope to reopen in 2022 and will keep our students informed. We regret the long break in lessons but must wait until our teachers can teach safely and students can attend without risk.
We all miss our students and look forward to opening up again.
Talk English hopes to resume classes after Easter in 2021. We're sorry for the long break but Covid circumstances mean that we cannot yet teach safely. We will announce changes on this page. But Julie, Cheryl and Talk English teachers wish
a happy, covid-safe christmas to all our students and a better 2021 for us all.
See you next year!
