The Day the Cape Stole My Heart: My First Sanlam Cape Town Marathon
It is Sunday morning, the 24th of May. The air is cool, the atmosphere is charged with excitement, and ahead of me lies 42.2 kilometers of pure challenge. This was the day of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon—a day I had been looking forward to for months. This would be my very first participation in this prestigious national event. Today, with stiff muscles and a heart full of emotion, I can only manage one word when I think back to that moment: wow. It was an absolutely magical experience.
Behind this single day, however, lies a long journey. People often only see the medal at the finish line, but the true journey began months ago. It consisted of dark mornings, early alarms, and long hours of hard training on the road. There were days of physical exhaustion, but when I finally ran in Cape Town, every drop of sweat made sense. All those sacrifices were definitely worth it.
Now, two days later, my body frequently reminds me of the scale of this achievement. My muscles are a bit stiff and sore, and every step feels like a small mountain on its own. My colleagues and the people around me all ask the same question: "Would you do it again?" My answer is undoubtedly, without any hesitation: Absolutely!
This first marathon did not just test my physical limits; it also enriched my soul. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was not just a race; it was a celebration of perseverance, the beauty of the Cape, and the power of human support. I will definitely run again next time.
